Ship toughness and evasives
« on: December 29, 2000, 09:21:00 AM »
Offline last night I did a few torp runs on the cruiser and CV.

They both sink after 2 hits...  I'd think maybe the cruiser would be in trouble after 2, but the CV....   I think the CV should be able to take more in for the sake of gameplay..
Also 6 1k's take down a carrier, maybe realistic, but....
Perhaps an option for fleet waypoints could be Zigzag.  The way points system works well, however unless u add a ton of waypoints or have a player constantly manning the con a buff can fly high and pop it.  A zigzag option might be painful for flight ops, but when a 17 or Lanc is overhead the zigzag pattern would help.  Perhaps an Evasive action button that doesn't change waypoints but just makes the fleet do a 360 when the button is pressed.

Just some thots..

How about clouds, thewobble

Those clouds gets really annoying in B17 II at times and that second, higher cloud layer with lower cloud layer makes it somewhat useless to go above 15000-25000ft.

TheWobble I refues to fix what isn't broke.
To be broke somthing must not work as designed.

Please start useing words like change, because broke impliles somthing differen't.

There are a lot more issues in the way the bomb's drop then just weather they are realistic or not. I have some ideas that will in the future allow us to put bomb dispersion in, but right now all it would do is put an end to buffing.

HT, your right they arnt broke, but they are kind wierd.
air resistance has no affect on them like they are falling in space.  What i was getting at was to "change" them to reflect the world we live in, not som atmosphereless windless place where things fall straight down and never lose speed or act as it should.  I know this is a back burner issue and the would drift/dispersion thing doesent bother me till i see a single lanc sink my carrier from 30k with a single perfectly straight line of bombs right down the middel.  I dont really care about it any more, i kinda gave up that crusade, seeing as how most everyone i talked too felt that a plane's climbrate being 3 inches too low compared to some chart is more important than the basic laws of gravity.

About the CV's toughness.

IIRC the Japanese CV Shinano was sunk by an US navy submarine. It was hit by four torpedos but the reason it really sunk was because it wasn't really fitted out yet and there were leaks in the watertight doors and the crew was totally green.

I admit that the Shinano was built on hull of a Yamato class battleship but still I believe that our Essex class CV should probably be able to take two or three torpedos and still remain afloat.

Also there is the difference between the Mk14 submarine torpedo and the air dropped torp we have now (I haven't got a clue on this). Anyone have data on those?

In RL the problem would still be there Wobble with or without dispersion, but in RL a carrier group can take evasives.  Of course in RL they would send several buffs +)  Its perhaps a similar comparison, a carrier sailing straight while a buff drops eggs with no dispersion.  I'll take zigzags with the carrier, and no dispersion with a bit of salt, on the eggs please.

Essex-class carriers, at least ours, can't take one torp hit. Offline, protected structures off, I gave the TG13 carrier a one ton, 33 knot enema from my PT-Boat. Sank it promptly. Cruiser took two hits up the butt before sinking, but a single torp right in the rear of the carrier sunk it. From my perspective, it hit close to the rudder. Kinda weird that our CV won't list when hit on the port or starboard side. Doesn't slow down either.

Bug maybe?

Ahhhh Flakbait, u may have found an error in my test..

I hit the CV once from the side, then for fun I tested to compare the torp's speed relative to the CV by firing it directly at the CV from behind...  Of course when the torp hit the stern, down the CV went.
Bug or not, its very unlikely an enemy will be able to hit the CV from directly to the rear.

Gonna try more from the side...
