The Declaration of Independence
« on: September 17, 2008, 11:16:09 AM »
Quick question for the history buffs here :)
If the Original States all signed up to it then surely each state should have had it's own copy? And did a copy actually get sent to the King at the time? Surely if it was directed at him then somebody will have delivered one?
Just curious about the mechanics of it all.

"Contrary to popular belief, two original July 5th, 1776 Dunlap printed broadsides with only Hancock and Thomson's names were the actual documents delivered to King George III notifying him of the resolution to absolve all ties with Great Britain. King George III never received a signed copy with a John Hancock’s signature large enough for him to read without his spectacles. The other names of the signers were not made public until 1777.

Sending a copy to King George was actually and after thought. These 'rebels' didnt consider the tyrant important enough to inform formerly of the absolution as boldly as suggested by Hannoodles legendary signature. The singers also didnt have to have their names present on the document because had the revolution failed their positions in the Continental Congress were well known and even during the war had any of them been captured they would have been shot run through with a sword hung or all of the above.
