This thread is about exploring ideas so please dont post unless you have something to add. Thanks in advance

First what do you all think about something like a "single click IFF". Assume there are no icons. Lets say your tooling about and you spot one of those black dots lo 11oc you head toward it to get a closer look. You move your mouse ovr dot and click (or whatever key) and it istantly sends a request to that dot ovr text buffer asking for id. Friendly ac only recieve buffer.  If no reponse you close you then click again for request and nothing  so you get closer and click again this time you click the red icon pops up identifing it as an nme ac. range could be set and instead of typing in a request fer id it is sent auto to friendlies maybe do it like padlock where you lock target or whatever. Nme ac only stays tagged while in whatever preset range.

If not how about allowing us to turn off our icons < in the towr only > this not only turns off the icons you see, but your own icon as well. that way its fair you dont see their billboard they dont see yours. Allow in twr only so people dont switch back and forth while in flite. We already can turn off tracers but Im no programer and AH is great either way and this is not a flame against what is just an exploration of what could be.

<Edit> you dont need it to be mouse specific... ie maybe like padlock is where you tag an object then cycle thru dots that are visable.

Making ICONS on/off a user-configurable setting has one flaw--a friendly P-51D and an enemy P-51D look exactly the same.

Point-and-click is an interesting concept, though.

Yeah, but think about this.
You're flying along, and you check high six.
here comes this guy screaming down on you.
If you're like me, you've got one hand on the JS base "look up", and one on the hat "look back".  For me, Mr. Willy's feats have always been prodigous, but moving the mouse and clicking on targets is beyond his capacity.

Leave the icons alone. Having to use a mouse to ID a con is not workable, particularly in a group fight operation. I do not have a HOTAS system and would need another hand to use a mouse while flying, fighting and using keyboard for views. Kind of silly to have to point a cursor at a dot to get a friendly or enemy ID.
