Help...!!!!
« on: December 27, 2008, 08:11:10 PM »
Ok, I just built a new pc and heres the history.  I started out with all the parts case included, put everything together like I always do.  Tried to start it and the case fan wouls wiggle, no spin and the vid card and cpu fans wouldn't budge.  I tried the power supply in another pc and same...so that (to me at least) means the power supp was bad.  No big deal, so I try a known good pow supp out of my sons pc and threw it into my new one and same prob.  So I say to myself..hmm looks like more than 1 problem.  back I go to Fry's and me and one of the tech guys look at it and we figure that both the power supp and m-board are bad so I return them.  I get a different manufacturer m-board and a different power supp.  I install them and this time every fan spins, although for only a second.

1 time in a past build, the board was making contact with the case and I guess grounding out..I cannot remember how I fixed it.  Does this sound like the board and case are making contact.  My next plan is to remove the board from the case and hook everything up and see if it runs.

Any suggestions?

Reset your BIOS on the MB could be a conflict there or a short.  Try BIOS reset if that does not work take every thing out including memory but leave the CPU and fan in, turn on does it stay on

YES add Video card
NO reseat CPU

Add one at a time until you find the problem, are you sure the PSU has enough power for all you have in your box

Check the smart fan settings in the BIOS.

You did remember to put all the spacers behind the motherboard right?

I still think the cables are not plugged in correctly or are loose. Read the manual carefully. It will tell you this. Double check those cables.

I have that feeling also, but could be something else.  Hence the replace one at a time.

Did you try checking to make sure your PSU is properly working.  If you have a PSU test plug try that, if your dont have one you can easily make one.  Look at your 20+4 connector, Locate the #4 pin (green wire only one) make a jumper with a paper clip (u shape) with the power cable to the PSU unpluged, disconnect the PSU from the Motherboard, place said jumper into the #4 Green and into the #6 black slots.  Make sure the paper clip is not touching anything conductive.

Plug in PSU, flip switch on PSU does it power up?
Yes, disconnect power and make sure switch is off, wait about 20 seconds then remove paper clip, reattach to MB.
No, remove PSU and return to Frys

Did you use any cables from another PSU, if you did, they may not have the same pin assignment at the PSU (learned this the hardway myself long time ago, does not do damage but PSU will not stay on)

Again remove all connections including SATA/IDE cables from components, remove video card, memory, soundcard etc etc.

Remove battery from MB, Use BIOS jumper to reset wait 20 seconds, replace battery and try booting with only the CPU and HSF attached, if it stays on power down and replace one component at a time.  If it does not, return MB CPU combo to Frys

latest update.......returned old power supp and mboard got new different ones..problem still existed.............tore my kids pc apart so I could use his power supp and hooked up his case power and reset switches...new board and power supp worked great.  Figured my power switch was hosed on original case so I returned that one.  Brought new case home and hooked up power supp and board outside case and worked great.  Place board in case, still works...woohoo I think I got this problem licked.  Install vid card, hook up cd, floppy and hard drives...power on ...wouldn't ya know the power comes on briefly then goes off.

This time when I put the board in, I Elmer's glued the little cardboard type washers to the tops of all the standoffs......thought mabye I was grounding out...I am officially at a loss and will begin calling around tomorrow to find a pc repair shop close by...Fry's wanted 2 weeks to troubleshoot.

This might possibly turn me off to building pc's altogether...anyone in Nor Cal that i might be able to take it to??

Thanks

Tim

Problem elimination is your friend:

First plug only power, cpu, cpu cooler, ram and displaycard in. Try to boot up. If boot successful, add a harddrive and try to boot up. If boot successful, add floppy and try to boot up, if boot successful add dvd-rom drive etc.

If at any step your boot fails try to reseat your memory _properly_ and graphics card. If it won't boot with cpu/ram/video only plugged in then you have a problem in one of those components and/or bios settings.

Bring your motherboard and cpu to Fry's and have them see if it posts. May cost a few $ but worth the aggravation. If you bought it local they may not charge. I had the same scenario and it was a faulty MB. They EEXC'd. See you bought at Fry's. They should see it posts at little or no cost. If tech says bad eexc it!!! This is why you shop at Fry's for the service. Tell em tech said its faulty. They will RMA it and give you new. No wait. When you get new, they charge $15 to install processor and see if it posts.
