Email question- says it's from our company but it's not
« on: January 28, 2009, 06:16:18 PM »
All of our stores have their own email address, for some reason we are all getting these emails from us to us with all this spam in it, for example, "From SP19... to SP19" any ideas on how to fix this and what causes it?
Thanks!

I have received those as well and I recall that they are quite harmless unless they contain strange attachments and you open them. If you check the "internet headers" from options menu you may notice that the actual sender address is not the one mentioned in the "from" or "sender" field. That would also give a clue who is spamming you if the address remains the same every time. It usually doesn't.

I just deleted such mails without reading. I'm not sure if some mails can "call home" indicating that they are actually read thus verifying that the target mail address is in use so it's then a potential target for further spam.

Usually this is an indication that someone who had your e-mail in his/hers contact list got infected with malware and the malware harvested your address. Now they're sending viagra etc. crap e-mails in your name all around the world.  :rock

I use a program that's called Mail Washer. It gives you the option to "bounce" emails back to the sender. A spammer starts getting them returned as "no such address" and takes you off the list. It takes a couple of weeks, but I've had my spam drop from 20 a day to a couple a week. "your mileage may vary"

I've heard that if you send a reply to a spam and it's to a legitimate business that has had it's computer hijacked you may be subject liability. I take it though in this instance that is not the case. Studied something like this in college a year or so back.

The email isn't actually getting sent from your stores more than likely.  The spammers can 'spoof' the email address.  I run a few domain sites and I get email that was 'sent' from my email address to myself, telling me about some great drugs etc.  It's not actually being sent from my email addresses - spammers are able to create it so it looks like it was sent from my own address.  The reason they do this is that most Spam Email Scanners will ignore messages supposedly sent from yourself (at least Gmail does).

In the case of mail washer it is NOT replying to the email, but bouncing it back as "undeliverable." Also it is bounced back to the address that sent it, no necessarily the "from" address.
