The Greatest raid of all
« on: February 07, 2009, 03:31:19 AM »
Stumbled across this on youtube. While I knew about this raid, I had never perceived how completely insane it was. A very cool watch. Part I and then follow up:

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Is this the raid were the British rammed a sub pen or something like that with an old Land Lease WW1 DD?  Recall reading a book about it when I was a kid.

Yes it is the attack on St Nazaire. It was a dry dock big enough to hold the German BBs. The destroyer was HMS Campbeltown, ex USS Buchanan (DD131), a Town class. It was one of the 50 transferred to the Brits in exchange for bases on British soil. For the attack on St Nazaire she was modded to resemble a German Mowe class destroyer.

I read about this many years back. What baffled me when I looked at the documentary was how many things could have gone wrong, as well as the balls those guys had. Incredible.
Clarkson mentions his father-in-law who was a VC winner at Arnhem. There is a documentary about it, but that one I have not found yet.
One fine program IMHO.
