Actually, that's not quite true. The Battle of Legnica was a crushing loss for the combined European armies that resulted in the death of their commander, Henry II the Pious of Silesia and the majority of the noble/prince Knights of the European allies. The Mongols never had intentions to expand further westward, and the Mongol forces that fought in the battle were a diversionary force to occupy the European allies to prevent them from coming to the aid of the Kingdom of Hungary, which was the main target of the main Mongol army. Afterwards, the Mongols retreated not because they lost (they thoroughly beat the crap out of the Hungarians and the European forces) but because Grand Khan Ögedei had passed the previous year and Ghangis Khan ordered all descendents to return to Mongolia to select a new Grand Khan.
Not saying the Europeans didn't fight bravely, I'm sure they did but they did lose this battle.
ack-ack
Hey ack, no argument from me, good post...
I do most of this stuff from memory, and that is
one of the small dusty ones from the far back shelf, lol....
Yep, the european army was slaughtered, the mongols left
none alive, as was their custom in warfare.. But also, I
know the Mongol army retreated on the verge of conquest..
That definately changed the course of history..
But I didn't know about them being ordered back..
Thats a new one to me...
My point was, that the poles are a fightin people...
In NO way, are they inept, or chicken squat!!!
So many times in history they have taken the field,
with no hope of victory, but they did it anyway...
They should be given their due...
