Or Juzz, consider the P-63 KingCobra.

Very similar speeds, and high speed handling, to the P-51 (slightly slower at high alts).

But it can outturn and outclimb the Pony.

Plus for the BFG people it has the handy dandy aircraft eliminator, the 37mm cannon + x4 .50 cals.

Then there will be much moaning and gnashing of teeth.

Seriously though its another "never been done aircraft" that would fit perfectly in with AH.

Oh OH OH then I want the La7, Yak3, 190D, F4U-4, P47M, ... <whips out a sheaf of paper with size 4 font print on it and clears his throat>

Combat23,

you forget one thing though, it wasn't only P-51's reason, there were MANY other things that made air superiority for allies.
No plane can have air superiority without support of many other things.

My point can be clearly said this way; You do assault into normandy without naval / air support, what would outcome be for infantry.

So quit saying its all because of P-51

Hers little statistic of the time I write this:

Plane     Kills    Killed   Ratio
P-51D     5045     4526     1.11
Bf109G10  1622     1902     0.85
Spitfrie  8363     7767     1.07
F4U       1185     1308     0.90
C.205     1047     806      1.29
Fw190A8   2317     1823     1.27
N1K2      3950     3396     1.07
La-5      1293     970      1.33

Now we see that top is something like this:
La-5
C.205
Fw190

But.. look at the numbers, La5 and C.205 is flown alot less than any other plane!
And look at the numbers of spitfrie, over 7500 kills/killed and P-51 has over 4500 kills/killed, over twice as much as any of the top planes.
Most folks flies Spitfrie because its easy to fly and newbies are advised to fly spitfrie because it is easy to fly and turns well and ... and... so on, making it perfect design, with exception of top speed (add 30mph more and spitfrie would be 100% perfect design in AH)
Then comes P-51, its soo famed (look at all those who thinks air superiority is only because of P-51), that many newbies flies it and dies in it, but then theres few who makes up with it...

Whom flies C.205 and La-5, which I have maybe heard from some rare sources only, not famed at all.
So, better pilots and dedicated pilots flies C.205 and La-5, not all the dweebs and newbies
Also low number of uses makes up for ratio in the hands of average and better pilots!

Also has to remember that Spitfries are mostly used in point defense, so they if what, gets vulched alot, which really makes up for killed ratio of spitfrie.

And uhh, I can only say about Bf109 that it has been downgraded alot while spitfires has got better! (cant outclimb spitfries no more, no way!)

Theres one intresting point though, C.205 with 2x7.7mm and 2x12.7mm *can* have a try to turn with spitfries, but with 20mm cannons it doesn't do that too well..
Thats not all either, with AUX tank it climbs to 18-20k without cannons, but with cannons to about 16-18k.
Though, it has alot less fuel than spitfrie.
(just amazed how spitfrie can fly alot longer than Bf109, which both have nearly same service range)

Any questions?

Sure took you long enough to get that out!

Very good post, but can you please put "109 Whine" near the top in the future?

Since when? Never heard that one before. (Looks at books) 980 vs 620 miles both with DT's. Hmmm...

Like I said, the Great plane debate is Great.

Juzz, That is why I said use a 51d high and 51 low. It is the combo together that would be tough to beat.

Verm, Ok I'll go with the 51A.

Fishu, Didn't say The P51 was the only reason. Just that it was the plane (and pilots) That did it. I even used the word controled because the allies never achieved absolute air superioraty.

I'm one of the new guys that does most of his dieing in LW aircraft with a few in La5's, so don't beat me up to bad.
I haven't even flown the 51 on line yet. Mite not be a bad Idea though....run faster I mite live longer

You know Combat23, P-51A had a climb rate of roughly 2,000 to 2,300fpm and was about 30mph
slower at sea level. Although it did handle
better than it big brother and was in my opinion the best looking of the stangs.
But then again none of the adverse conditions seem to be modeled into the Stang anyway.

Anyway I would be careful what you wish for.
You just might get it.

Guess  I'll have to get some more info. stuff I have read says the P51a was faster and handled better then the 51b,d at low level ie: climb rate 3800ft/min, top speed 409 at 10,000, using a V1710-81 Allison at 1330 hp. course you better get out and walk at much over 15,000.

btw anyone got some spec's on the P63? I have some info on the P39 but almost nothing on the Kingcobra.

See ya up stairs

What do you want to know about the P-63 Kingcobra?

I have the pilots manual, and America's Hundred Thousand (AHT) which has just about everything you could ever want to know about the P-63 or any other American Fighter for that matter.
