Nate or Pyro, a quickie question
« on: June 06, 2000, 12:02:00 AM »
Ok, yes, I am paranoid. Very much so. I also worry far too much.

Now, I wonder if the Yak will make the 109G10 obsolete. I've asked the question before and will continue to ask it (to myself, nonetheless!) more and more as 1.03 moves closer.

It seems to have a slightly biger ammoload, almost equal climb and max speed, much better turn and roll performance, better high speed handling etc. Only thing it seems not to have is better high altitude performance. Which is sorta moot because 99% of all fights end up under 10k (or I end up there a lot at least   ).

SO will it be a 109G10 killer, and will I be forced to go from a manly plane to a sissy 190A5?

Santa, check out the charts for our G-10.  It's modeled like a K-4.  Fear not.

What's the big deal? They fly Yak and we fly 109G-10, that's it. If they have better aircraft then we must be better pilots.

Every plane has their weaknesses... bombload, ammo load, guns, short WEP, compression, short range, you name it. Yak will have weaknesses too. Learn to exploit them. That's what air combat is all about.

Just becuase you are paranoid... Doesn't mean that someone isn't out to get YOU!!

And you can bet that I will be out to get you and your little G10 Tooooooo....  {Sounding like the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz, to Dorthy and Toto her dog}

Hehehe just kidding Evil Santa (I still like my grinch pic better).

The Yak-9U and the G10 should be very similar birds, so I don't see how one can make the other obsolete.

There should be two major differences in the two planes, max speed and high speed handling.

The max speed of the Yak is 434mph at 18,000ft. The max speed of the G10 is 452mph at around 20k-22k (if I remember right). Thats a big edge to the G10, since it can control the how and when of the fight.

Now the Yak, shouldn't have the high speed handling problems that the G10 does (I say shouldn't, due to the things I have read, but we havent' seen what actually comes out of the FM in AH). So thats the big advantage of the Yak over the G10.

Otherwise they are pretty similar, except for the Black Cross & Red Star.

So depending on how you fly these two characteristics should cancel one another out.

Personally, and leonid or funked may disagree with me, but I think alot of people are over rating the turning ability of the Yak. Look at its wingloading, its not much better than the P-51. So don't look for it to be a real turner.

Just my opinon. All we can do is wait and see.

Yep Yak-9 and Yak-3 didn't have particularly great wingloading.  They had awesome powerloading though - better for vertical maneuvering.  The wingloading is not great, but enough to have an edge over the sloth-like German planes.

AGH!

You are ALL out to get me!

Ok, G10 is faster than Yak at alt. That's the good news. What about weed running, like it seems I spend an awful lot of time doing?

Jochen it is indeed the man not the machine but the machine does play a part, no?

And they made the Yak too mean looking. It is WAY overmodelled. I want it pink with fluffy sheep on it.

G-10 is faster in the weeds too.  It's very well overmodeled.

Hmm, from what _I_ saw in stats the Yak should be faster down low. Is it not along the lines of 367 mph at sea level? in comparison to 363 for P51?

BTW the quotes for turning are from anecdotal stuff. If it is ANYTHING like the quotes it should have a wicked turn rate, but very poor E retention in a flat turn. Much like a P51, except the Yak shouldn't need flaps for the rate increase.

Gordon and Khazanov's book quotes the Yak-9U at 373mph at SL.

Pyro's data sheets have the P-51 at 367-368 mph at SL, and the G10 at 365-370mph range at SL. It harder to get an exact reading off the G10 graph since it lacks the minor tick marks.

Overall, I would say these 3 aircraft are going to be very close too one another speedwise at SL.

The Typhoon? Bah who cares

If it starts to gain on you in a stern chase all you have too do is pull hard into the vertical, and the damn thing (the Tiffie chasing you) wobbles and falls out of the sky. hehehe

Of course we are yet to see the La7 <*hint*, *hint* next variant Pyro *hint*>.  Didn't it do around 375mph at SL, also? It only did 420 at altitude, but it was one screaming mother on the deck.
