Wireless Internet Setups
« on: May 04, 2009, 07:22:20 PM »
I had to install a wireless setup in my new place due to the distance between our modem and my desktop. I did some research, and purchaced an "N" type setup.

As I've been out of the IT world for almost 10 years now, can I get some advice on maximizing my signla and minimizing lag? Once installed, I noticed my initial ping rate to the AH servers has jumped about 20, from the low 60's to low 80's. There doesn't seem to be any effect in game though. But I'd rather identify potential problems and correct them before the impact game play.

A correctly functioning wireless connection should not add any increase in latency to the AH servers.  Your slowest link is still the Telco itself, not any home networking gear you have.  Most likely your 20ms ping time increase is a result of your moving to a "new place", unless you mean you tested it with a cable first.

That all said, if you enable certain features on most "wireless routers" such as firewall (as an example), it would increase your latency as the device is taking longer to inspect the network traffic.

Having a "N", "G", or even "B" type wireless connection is not going to impact your ping times in AH.
