Actually, it is what version of WIndows as well.  Microsoft has arbitrary limits placed in all its operating systems.  And no matter how much RAM your computer has, or what operating system you use, Microsoft will not allow any 32 bit application to use more than 2GB of RAM.

The following table shows what physical and virtual limits several of the recent Microsoft operating systems support.  There are a couple of variables I did not include as they are not standard and require manual patches to be done to the operating system.  There are also some versions of the operation system I did not include as they are very specific to various tasks and, generally, are only available for servers.

In all 64 bit operating systems, each 32 bit application is restricted to 2GB of physical and/or virtual RAM.  The only exception to this rule is when the application has been compiled with the /LARGEADDRESSAWARE flag in the Microsoft compiler, which then allows the 32 bit application full access to 4 GB of RAM.

Then you need to look carefully that you have supported hardware. XP64 is essentially Server 2003 and not widely used so you may find it hard to find working drivers for some hardware.

32-bit XP is still the most reliable choice.

lol i was being silly .. i have no reason to upgrade i am gonna stick with XP-32 i do have copies of just about everything listed laying around though.. i made the comment about XP-64 and Server 2003 being the same in a earlier post somewhere in the bbs

For those looking to buy a new pc, it may be worth holding on until after the 1st of July. Looks like Microsoft will release Windows 7 as a free upgrade!

they have released 2 more builds since the 7100 RC build..........( the 2nd build is not open to public beta just yet, is only reportedly leaked  )
