DSL modem set up.
« on: June 08, 2009, 11:44:02 AM »
Just purchased my second dsl modem in about 2 years. Seems they would last longer. This time I connected the phone line to the surge protector and then to the computer. Is this how it should be done? Am I losing bandwidth?

Thanks all!

No, you don't have to, but surges happen on the phone system too.

You can think of it the same way as you can think of lightning; it's come a few thousand miles to get to the ground and a little 1/2 inch fuse isn't going to stop it.
Well, that phone signal's come whatever distance, so unless you have a really low quality surge protector, what's another foot or so of travel?

The new dsl seems really fast. I guess it doesn't matter. Also, my screen wood flicker when I booted up and now it doesn't. Apparently it's been going bad for some time.

No, you don't have to, but surges happen on the phone system too.

11-12 years ago there was an electrical surge through the phone lines during a storm that zapped my (at that time) 56K modem.  I always made sure to run the line through a surge protector after that.

I've tried to run my DSL modems through a surge protector, but it seems as tho the modems are very sensitive. I kept having errors until I removed the surge protector...

When I ran DSL I also went through a modem every 16 months like clock work, every year when I resigned the contract I'd make sure I got a new modem out of it. Rest assured, I needed it before the year was over.

Be careful with the Surge Protectors/Suppressors. I used to always run my phone line through one and then plug it into my DSL modem. However, one day while on the phone with Tier 2 support at AT&T I learned that the Surge Protector's/Suppressor's noise reduction feature was looking at the DSL signal as a line spike thus reducing the signal strength and causing line errors.

Yes, the DSL will still work. It will only have more errors and might be a little slower than if you didn't hook it up to the Surge Protector/Suppressor.
