Right, you'd rather have a bleak individual who has no sense of humor and thinks his only goal that day is to fly the plane. The pilot is responsible for more than the safety of the aircraft. Humor suggests a connection with your passengers. Thus in my opinion, the pilot acknowledges the passengers by presenting something unique and entertaining.

I'd rather have the lively pilot than the notebook pilot.
