Mobo post beep codes

Are they universal, i.e. - does 3 beeps always indicate a bad mobo, no matter the manufacturer?    A friend at work claims this; I'm not sure.

No, they are motherboard specific, although there is often a certain amount of consistency between them - but you can't count on it.

If you're beeping, get the manual for your specific motherboard (or computer model, if it's a Dell/Gateway/HP etc. rather than a custom build.)

Thanks guys, I'm not surprised to learn they are motherboard specific.  This guy claims to have gotten out his "A+ certification textbook" and supposedly found the passage that explained 3 beeps always means a bad motherboard.

Why are some people so full of bulltoejam?

In that case, most likely because he is proud of having an A+ certification. Which isn't something to really be proud of in the computer world, comparatively.

Besides, A+ Cert books fall out of usefulness very quickly. The information they're based on shifts constantly. Depending on how old that book is, it may be entirely worthless. Well, besides being fun to read about how things worked "back in the day." :D
