Finally going to College.
« on: October 09, 2009, 10:14:30 AM »
After much wasted time(been 14 years since High School) and pretty much not knowing what to do with the rest of my life I have decided to get back into school.  Will be beginning Colorado Technical University's Online program to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology starting the middle of next month.  Question for those vet's out there.....  Those of you currently/thinking about going to school eligible for the G.I. Bill as well as the post 9-11 option, have you thought about which one is best suited for you or which did you choose and why?  Having less than 36 months but more than 30 on active duty after sep 11th '01 I opted for the post 9-11 bill just based off of a possibility of getting 90-100% as well as the money goes directly to the school( so I don't run the risk of spending it as opposed to paying for education)  Thank goodness my employer has a great program in place to assist those of us who want to pursue continuing education just in case I don't receive 100%.

Just was curious as to what your thoughts are.  I did my research on both the VA's website and spoke with the Financial Aid advisor, but wanted to hear what you all had to say as well.  Also  With traveling more than 330 days out of the year and out of the country for work it's going to be tough as nails, but have to stick with it.

I would also look into Pell Grants if you are eligible....those are getting close to 5,000 to 6,000 dollars a year.

Personally I dislike welfare-type programs but when it was the difference between not going and going I signed up for it.

I did talk to the advisor about those, and I did get my pin from FAFSA for loans, however also trying to buy a house through VA/Wells Fargo and didn't want anything to go on my credit( not sure if they check it or not) to possibly ruin my chance.

Take whatever free (non-repayed funds) you can get and don't feel sorry for it. As a side note back in the early 1990's I had a few friends that qualified for max pell grant money and it bought plenty of non-school items...like cars, stereos, booze, etc... Yeah they abused the system but they also got kicked out of school for not going to class and lost the pell grant with no hope of ever getting it back.

That's funny..I'm attending the Univ of Phoenix online for the same degree. I've been a system admin for 25 years and decided to get a degree in it. These days any high level management IT job requires a Bachelors. If it goes good I plan on getting my masters in case I decide to teach.
