Who Flies the F4U-1?
« on: December 12, 2001, 09:23:00 AM »
I have come to really enjoy flying this plane.  Anyone have any opinions about the F4U-1?

PS.  I want to see if Fester or Fariz can fly this plane for a 50 kill streak.

The only F4u that I've flown has been the F4u-1.  I don't fly it often, but it is a great little airplane.

I've only flown it a little but I love it, and it's easier for me to wing up with an ex-marine squaddie in a hog then to try and get him to fly a navy plane (F6F) with me.   ;)

I fly it when I want to collect perkies. It is a nice little buggy to fly.

However it has it's short comings. Mostly it climbs and accelerates like a Lancaster so be shore not to get caught low and slow. However it does have a pretty small turning radius so if you are closing on a tight turning foe you might surprise them especially with flaps. Where you may run into trouble is when the nme gets you slow and then accelerates into a slow climb. You will be left wallowing like a pig. By contrast the -1D has a significantly better climb rate so I prefer it for most MA sorties against virtical beast like the LA-7 and Yak-9U. However with less than 50% fuel the -1 can give even a Spit or NIK2 all they want in a maneuvering fight if flown properly.

One other catch in the F4U-1 is the fuel load. It carries roughly 20% more internal fuel than the -1D. So if you would normally carry 75% fuel on a mission carrying 50% in the -1 is reccomended. Otherwise the extra weight will feel like you dragging an anchor.

I love the -1, I fly it as my main ride most of the time, my only problem with it is when you land it likes to ground loop.

F4UDOA has it right!

I love the -1.  The only huge minus other than what DOA pointed out is the spin.  She is the true ensign killer and you can really see the modifications made to her shine in the -1D.

used to fly it for some time when 1.08 came out.
main reason was the cool paint job  :) and it handles nicely with speed. it's terrible near stalling, but what turned me off was the worst climb rate on an AH fighter and lack of jabo capability.

I really like the -1, not to mention, it has a better 6 view than the -1D (For those of us who need that view  ;) -). I also recommend burning fuel in the wing tanks first. I generally use those while climbing. Keeps more of the fuel mass near the C.G. (Laterally speaking).
