There is a 15 minute short film from the director that is a sort of prequel to the movie, it details the landing of the 'prawns' in South Africa.  It's what got Peter Jackson to notice the guy and eventually led to making the semi-sequel District 9.

rented it and watched it last night. I thought it was great.

3 reasons:

1) alien "lightning" weapon
b. pig carcass used as a projectile during battle
iii. Nigerian cat food scam
