FOV with 3 monitors and SoftTH
« on: March 31, 2010, 06:17:58 PM »
I am a bit confused about the maximum field of view that can be achieved using 3 monitors and SoftTH.  Currently, I am using a 27.5" Hanns G monitor at 1920x1200 and the game is set to the max field of view (which is something like 145 deg - doing this from memory.)  If I were to use 3 - 27.5 monitors, my resolution would be 5760X1200, correct?  What then could I set as my max FOV?  Is it the same, or could I theoretically get 360 deg from the 3 panels without using the view keys or TrackIR?

I think 180 degrees is the limited placed by DirectX.

You can not get 360 out of any current setup that I know of at the moment. It just isn't possible due to software limitations...things may be changing soon though but I don't think HTC has any plans for that...but what do I know.

AH is limited to 145. If you go to 3 monitors you'll see the horizontal middle third of your current view but it will be larger. Zoom in to a 50 degree view and you'll see what you middle monitor would look like.  Larger is good and I was surprised at the difference it makes but you lose the top and bottom thirds of your current view and that affects your SA.
You could run 3 monitors in portrait mode but most don't have the view angle for that. You need more than 160,  so an IPS panel is best for portrait mode. That would give you what you see now but it would be bigger.

I put in a request for a wider view option because i think 3 widescreen monitors need more than 145 degrees.

If we are limited to 145 deg FOV, then a 37" LCD HDTV with Track IR looks to be a better idea than 3-27.5 monitors.  A 1080p Vizio costs $448 vs. 2 additional 27.5 LCD monitors @ $310 each, plus an additional video card ~ $100.  The horizontal res gets reduced to 1080 vs. 1200, but you gain a larger image, and you don't lose the top and bottom of the frame - not a bad compromise.  I am thinking this through properly?

My current processor/video card is an E8400 o/c'd to 3.66ghz and an XFX GT260.  I get 59fps, native to the Hanna G monitor.  I run all options set to max, including soft shadows - except I have to disable AntiAliasing.  If AA is enabled to the first step, my frame rate goes down to the mid 30's - too slow for me.

I don't think a TV works as well as a PC monitor. With TrackIR you can still look around and see everything, it's just a little more work when your vertical field of view is narrower. It seems like 1920x1200 is the most your video card can handle at your current settings. Going to 5760x1080 would probably limit your FPS more than you want. I think your best bet is to stay with what you have for now. When you want a bigger image use zoom, then zoom out for a wider view for SA.

If you want visualize what you’ll get with a three screen setup, I put some screen shots up this post:  3 monitors (surround gaming) or one big monitor?

Though its not SoftTH hope this photo helps.
the photo's below are using 3-19" lcd's with TH2Go res at 3840X1024 and track IR. I believe that SoftTH can do the same but I can't sware to it. the alignment looks off but it is just paralax error. sitting Behind the stick everything lines up (photo 2 was taking at a lower angle)
