Now I have a K7 and have no fps issues, but previously I had a K6 400 and 2 Voodoo2 SLI conf.
With the K6 I got 19-24 fps in "lousy" furballs near the ground, but fps drop below 10 in any furball is just over an airfield or with a single P38 in front of me.
The fps in frontal view of 190 during normal flight was 35-40.

PII 333mhz, 192mb ram and a V770 Ultra: FPS is high 20's to almost 40 depending on where I am and what I am flying around.
I shut off ground clutter (sheep, trees and rocks) as soon as I log on to save FPS when low and near the ground. I regain at least 5fps if my PC doesn't have to render them. Shut off the ground clutter with a CTRL C to help.

Tonto, if you have a k6-2 or k6-3, that's about the best that is possible.  The FPU (floating-point) performance of those processors is markedly inferior to even a Pentium PRO.  The K7 has a superb floating point unit (about 33% better than a PIII) and as such performs well in AH.

Your only solution is to try drivers until you find the one that performs best.  You can also add RAM to your system.  (If you have more than 64MB this won't make much of a difference though.)

For more info, check out the AH FAQ file.  There's a section in there about how to optimize your system.
