New headset, jacks work fine, USB = no sound.
« on: July 17, 2010, 04:03:25 PM »
So I stepped on my headset this week.  Picked up a new one today. model is Logitech G330.  It has standard jacks and also a USB adapter.

When I plug into the jacks on my front panel it mutes the desktop speakers and sound and mic work fine through the headset, just like my old one.  However when I try the USB adapter, it mutes the desktop speakers, and the sound button in the system tray says it's playing on "Speakers (Logitech G330 headset) even shows the green bar bouncing up and down with music,  but I get no sound.

I don't mind using the 2 3.5 jacks still, I just thought the USB would be handy having only one plug to put in and out.

Any thoughts.

Saggs, generally speaking USB is the very bottom of the barrel for performance, especially for gaming.

At a guess I'd say that what's happening is that even when you plug the headphones in via USB, the playback device being used by Windows is still the Realtek onboard sound controller.   You'd have to switch the playback device to the headset.  You might not want to do that, as not only does the CPU bear the entire burden of processing all sound (probably the same as it does when using the onboard sound) - but every USB data transfer essentially halts the CPU.  Needless to say, neither one enhances game play...

Anyone know if the Realtek ALC889A onboard sound that he has is any better than the USB-based "sound card" built into the Logitech G330 USB headphones?

Yes, the onboard audio chip, as bad as they are, are better than any USB based headset in terms of CPU overhead.  Remember, the USB bus is a serial bus that generates and IRQ on each byte of data.  The onboard audio is going to be a parallel bus, so it can get 4 bytes for each IRQ (assuming a 32 bit data bus, on a 64bit data bus it would be 8 bytes at a time).

That all went pretty much waaaay over my head. :headscratch:

But I DO get the general gist of it, that I'm better off continuing to use the 3.5mm jacks over USB...  and so I will.  Thanks

:headscratch: A little bit more money?!?

I hardly consider 2.5 times the price a "little bit more"

Best headphones I've ever owned.   I use a powered USB hub and these things kick ass!
