Lehrgeschwader 1 Ju-88A-5
« on: July 25, 2010, 12:08:17 AM »
Saw this profiles of a Ju-88.  Given it being a A5 and we have A4, could this skin be done?

The Ju 88 A-5 was an interim upgrade of the A-1. It had the longer span outer wing panels being planned for the A4, but not the more powerful engines. The A-5 was used alongside the A-1 during 1940, but was replaced by the A-4 from mid 41 on. It is pretty much identical in external appearance and usage to the A-4, so I can't see why it should not be allowed.

It's interesting that though the unit was designated a Lehrgeschwader that Wikipedia has loss rates for it in many major battles through the war. How exactly were the Lehrgeschwader used during the war? Were they a kind of baptism-by-fire training wing?

FYI: That's not black. If you're hoping for a black skinned Ju88 (ugh) I'm certain they never existed. That's green/green camo, printed way out of register in a book, then scanned way out of register from that book, and the end results look black.

It's not, though.

I knew it was a dark green.  It would be nice to have that skin on AH.

Initially the Luftwaffe had planned to establish 3 Lehrgeschwader but the war began with only two in existance and the third was cancelled. They were, theoretically, supposed to consist of 5 Gruppen of each branch of the Luftwaffe (fighters, destroyers, bombers, recon, Stuka) to develop and test new tactics for the different types. It became soon apparent that the makeup was not practical and slowly both LG 1 was changed into a rather normal Kampfgeschwader (even before the BoB) while LG 2 was disbanded bit by bit (it ceased to exist in early 1942 when I.(J)/LG 2 became the new I./JG 77). So already from 1940 on Lehrgeschwader 1 operated as an ordinary bomber unit - a role change that was finally made official when it was renamed KG 6 in 1943.

Incidentally there are plenty of Ju 88 schemes with the undersides and often the white parts of the markings overpainted in black. However the black paint was usually very crudely applied in the field and as a result these are not very nice looking schemes.
