Painting one of our birds at my squadron
« on: August 11, 2010, 11:20:01 PM »
So for the anniversary of Naval aviation my skipper wants us to re-paint our show bird. I told our skipper we should paint it like a WWII aircraft. He was very excited about the idea. He wants me to come up with a sketch for it. Three limitations. Im in a helicopter squadron, so cant really copy and paste. No pin up girls, not "PC". And we can only paint the tail section of the aircraft due to Navy regs. More specific we Have MH-60S's. I need an idea you all would think would look pretty cool an turn out well. I will post a picture of our bird so yall can get a better idea.

EDIT: Has to be a U.S. theme. Sorry no swastikas or rising suns.

How about something like the dragon part of The Dragon and His Tail?

What I know about the MH-60's is that one of the jobs they have is search & rescue. Is that what you guys do? If so, I recommend looking up some PBY Catalina paint jobs, they had a similar job in WWII as I understand.

My two cents, have fun with the bird! 'hawks are great  :aok

Thanks guys.

Brooke, Id love to do something like that but its been done before. Another squadron down the wing had a dragon painted on their bird recently.

Jager, we have the capability to airbrush. But, we cannot do anything in extreme detail only because Im sure the time frame were going to get to get this done will be small. Also the military is broke. Recently we've been selling our jet fuel back just to get money for parts.

Eskimo, Our main mission is search and rescue for the Bush. But we also do vert rep and our birds are armed helo so we do personal escort and "other" types of missions. Didnt even think about PBY's. Thanks for the idea.

Just another little tidbit. Our squadron name is the Tridents. Our logo is a red trident.

If ya want to be a bit historicaly acurate to the WWII days it'll likely be a mostly dark navy blue coat over the tail with a white graphic of some type.  I'd settle for soemthing fancy and a ltitle stunning for the show bird.  If ya can weasle in one or two other birds for a tail paint job you could have a "wingman" with just a bold white diagonal line and maybe the third would just have the blue coat on its tail... or maybe the squad emblem... because ya know... that old-school navy blue is just sexy.

I really like this idea.

Also I could swear the trident was used for a navy squadron (or more) back in WWII.

You could do insignia from a Black Cat PBY.

Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
