I took Dinger's test results (thanks Dinger!) measured the ROF of the various guns with a stopwatch and posted a table of lethality data on the WEB at:   http://home.earthlink.net/~jayboyer/AHGun102.htm .

Hooligan, thanks very much for all the work!

I find this interesting reading. Looks like using Dinger's info the FW and the Cannon Hog are pretty close.

 I`m not positive if I remember correctly-but didn`t the MG 131 rounds have an explosive payload?

If so why is the lethality less than the other mg`s?

Most heavy machine gun rounds had some chemical component, usually about 1g of incendiary or explosive content.  The most common US .50 round was the M8 AP/I and it had 1g of incendiary.  The Mg131 AP/I round has .4g of incendiary.  The Mg131 HE round has 1g of explosive.

An Mg131 round has just about half of the Kinetic energy of a .50 M2 round when it leaves the barrel.

Very nice work Hooligan  

The one that really suprises me is the Italian 12.7mm MG by looking at its stats it should be less effective than the MG131 due to its much lower rate of fire, but it actually comes out more lethal. Any ideas ? The italian round is lighter, slightly faster, but has 1/3 the rof of the MG131.

And I love the "squeak factors"

Is Off-Line and On-Line damage and lethality EXACTLY the same here in AH?

I ask because I seem to remember a lot of controversy on WB that it was fundamentally different in their sim for some obscure security reason.

Re: On/off-line damage, HE rounds and the like.
The test was conducted offline, but I have reason to believe it has some relevance to what occurs online, because:
the hangars in both cases take 3000 pounds of  bombs.
Moreover, in both connection states (using the trusty M16), just over 1250 rounds of .50 cal will flatten a hangar.
Note that range to target did not appear to affect the results.
Furthermore, these are all A2G stats.  How they apply to A2A is anybody's guess.

Badger it wouldnt' matter if its offline or online, or if the target is a plane or the hanger.

Your looking at "absolute" lethality. IE how many rounds of .50 does it take to kill the B-17.

What hooligan did is called "relative" lethality. In other words how lethal is plane A compared to plane B. These ratio's should stay the same in either condition, or for most target types. If it doesn't, thats when you start looking for bugs  

I probably didn't explain that very well, but its early and I need way more caffeine.

now, is the 20mm mine-shell simulated in AH?
(it was not a late-war development, the mine shell was developed for the mg-ff > mg-ffm)

805m/s MV (m/s) (lighter than HE > faster)
(and according to Nowarra
ROF
synchr.: 550-750 /s
standard: 780-800 /s

btw according to Nowarra the 7.9mm had a MV of 900m/s

I have saved that sheet you made and I certainly agree that for the most part that is what I would have expected.

This indicates that at a reasonable gun range the 4 cannon FW and the Typhoon are not that far appart. I think that a range of 800 yards would really effect that and that a range of 1100 yards would be real interesting.

Funked brings up the next question. I would bet that the damage modeling for a hanger is signifigantly different then the damage modeling for a plane.
You cannot critical hit a hanger.

How do we reproduce that table vs an aircraft..

If you wanted to test against aircraft, this would involve repeated trials in the training arena shooting each weapon type against an aircraft and recording the number of hits required to kill it.
