dx8 is from hell
« on: July 19, 2001, 04:56:00 PM »
i D/L'd and installed dx8 (i'm not using the beta), since installing all my programs have become unstable especialy the hi-graphics ones. i'm using a voodoo3 3000 agp with windows 98. i checked the 3dfx page and i have the newest drivers for my card but only the drivers for windows 2000 specificly mention dx8 suport. anybody else have any problems with this? i wrote 3dfx tech suport but the e-mail came back undeliverable.
is this a driver problem as i suspect or could it be something i overlooked. the problem deffinatly started imediatly after installing dx8.

thanks for any help.
Apathy

also i've been thinking of giving this card to my son and getting a new vid card. any sugestions for the best card for under around $150-175

hi,

I dont have any problems with my DX 8 and i am not sure what could cause the problem sorry cant help you there.  I believe 3dfx went out of business so thats probably why you not getting any answers from them.  The card for price you want and to get is  Nvidia Geforce2 Pro DDR 64mb (but the ultra is the way to go cost around 200 bucks).  Currently i have the Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO retail for around 150 or even cheaper.  Pick your choice.  Geforce ultra is very good card when it comes to gaming.

Yes Capt . here is a link
 http://home.adelphia.net/~captjohn/DirectX7.0a/
btw the eng after the DX7.0a name stand for English

" Chances are, if a DirectX update gives you problems, it's because your machine
probably had problems before the update.
"

But here is a simple way of reloading Windows without losing anything and will fix any window problems your haveing with Windows ... you shouldn't be having any problmes with DX8.0a

Rename the iemigrat.dll file to iemigrat.old and just re-install windows from the
run line on the start menu. If your CD drive is D:..... D:\Setup /ie /iv /im/is/p j and let 'er go. Will
take about 20 mins, and you won't loose
anything. You may have to upgrade your IE (windows updates) afterwards tho, depending on what version you're on"

Then  go back and reload DX8.0a

Back up ... as always.

Please let me know

I have a voodoo 3 3000 AGp, DX8 and win 98 with no stability problems. I recall someone saying to install DX8 THEN install the new drivers for the Voodoo. That is what I did and no problems. BTW I am using the voodoo v1.07 drivers.

ya, i got it fixed. found a dx8 uninstaller utility on the net then re-installed windows from dos(wouldn't let me do an install-over in windows) now everythings fine with dx7a.
i finally got a responce from 3dfx suport they say that suport is the only office open at 3dfx so there will be no dx8 drivers for windows 98. so i guess i need a new card before i can install dx8.
thanks for all the help guys.

Using DX8 with my Voodoo 3 PCI really fargged things up for me also.
I had to go back to DX7a.
Did not try all that dll switch-a-roo that Sprint suggested above though. I don't like to dink with that stuff if I don't have to, and since AH worked fine (other than low FRs) with the older vs. I stuck with it.

That's all changing now though...new Visiontek GeForce 2 GTS 64M installed last night.

Currently running DX7a with no problems.
1024x768 32 bit mode at 75hz gives me 70 fps on my Duron 750.   :)

Will start another post asking for optimum settings.   ;)
