On this day in 1943 - World War II meat, butter and cheese rationing began, in 1945 - The US 7th Army captures Mannheim and Heidelberg, and also in 1945 - Gen. George S. Patton's 3rd Army captures Frankfurt, as "Old Blood and Guts" continues his march east.
