See my take on it is that anyone that buys a computer might as well plan on throwing the hardware away after a few years (sometimes months). All the security you install wont stop the process of age and wear and tear or the march of progress. What you want to protect is the user (kids and so on) and whatever work you do on the system. Is a software firewall going to offer that protection? No. The reason is that outbound filtering is illusory. All it does is give you a false sense of security. Sorry but thats how I see it.
I cant bring myself to stop after telling someone how to fix a software firewall. They arent protected and I know it and since I know it I have to tell them. I feel that anything less is irresponsible.
