Windows 7 paging file issue

The title of this Microsoft advisory is a bit scary, so be sure to read the fine print...

Windows 7 deletes all System Restore Points upon reboot

It apparently can happen if your paging file gets very fragmented, so they suggest "...selecting 'Custom size' and setting both 'Initial size' and 'Maximum size' to the same value..." as a preventative.

Doesn't matter to me.. I have system restore disabled anyway.  I've never seen a restore actually fix a problem without causing more issues.  Here I am, 17 months on my Win7 installation and not one single problem.

I figure that if my system is ever so hosed that a 'restore' becomes necessary, I'll just wipe and reinstall...

Just a data point, I used a restore point to recover my wife's win7 box from a bad service pack one install.  Surprised the heck out of me that it worked, but it did.

I think the O&O defrag "boot time defragmentation" will prevent this problem.

It has been suggested for a very long time to always set the min and max page file size to the same number. That way as you run out of space the system doesn't develop certain problems trying to allocate more page file when there's no room on the drive left.

This was the case all the way back in Win98 (at least that's as early as I remember it). It's interesting that they figured out a specific instance of the OS having fits, but generally speaking the page file detail isn't news to me.

I use create image file to back up my OS onto a standard hard drive. This has saved me several times. Will look into this page file thing.

I can confirm that I have been using O&O Defrag with a Windows managed page file since installing Windows 7. I use the 'Boot Time Defragmentation" and all of my restore points still exist. Having siad that though Ihave to point out that on the OS that I have setup for AH I use neither O&O nor Windows Restore.
