What IS Sound Acceleration?

All I can find on the subject refers to turning sound acceleration off. But what exactly is the change made when you move tge slider between the options?
A Rook who first flew 09/26/03 at the age of 13, has been a GL in 10+ Scenarios, and was two-time Points and First Annual 68KO Cup winner of the AH Extreme Air Racing League.

Eliminate any Crystallization... virtualizing... CMSS-3D... and so on... is the same thing as reducing acceleration.

That and in the far end completely disabling hardware acceleration, leaving software emulation only. In Windows Vista/7 the hardware acceleration via directx is gone by default though.
