I was launching from A9 and flying into A10 last night, trying to bring about 18-20K into the fight- that enemy red bar on the dar was long! I wanted to be sure I was at least co-Alt with the defenders if things got hairy.

What I found was that there was a CV near the west coast of A10. We had an armor column moving towards A10 and I noticed that Hellcats and F4U's were launching from the CV to hit the column. While I had originally come to suppress the fighters until our bombers could kill the field, I decided that it would be wiser to have a couple tanks sitting on the field to kill any spawning enemy. I dropped down to attack the F6F's. Several of us must have been thinking the same thing, and a general melee' developed.

I was able to move in-and-out, and by staying vertical keep the fight fairly close. Some of those F4U's got uncomfortably close (D.5-.6 under my tail!) but I managed to have just enough oomph to stay outta the guns. Took on a couple La7's too, but I was reeeeeaaal careful there. One managed to get my engine when we HO'd, but fortunately he died. I ditched near our field. Got my engine snagged on the second trip and luckily the guy that did it couldn't follow me out of the furball for what would have been a sure kill. Third trip was the best- 5 kills, one ack, and helped scatter bad guys all over the place. Landed with no gas and no ammo.

I don't know if the Rooks ever got the base. It was fun, and I didn't hear one whine from anyone about what type of plane anyone flew, the numbers imbalance, gangbanging, the general nonsense. Flatly put it was one of the most pleasant nights of killing people I had spent in some time.
