In the middle of restoring my Game Computer
« on: December 10, 2012, 04:35:11 PM »
Seems when I switched from AMD to Nvidia it left some pieces of the AMD catalyst Control Center. Looked it up and they said the best thing was to reinstall the OS. So that is what I'm doing.

Reinstalled the W7 64 bit and it didn't recognize the hard drive. Which was a intermittent reoccuring problem. So the next day I installed the 32 bit version. Also the 64 bit was having issues with the USB connections. Looked it up on the internet about a week ago and there seems to be a fix. Didn't read into it much.

However, now, so far, it recognizes my hard drive and my stick seems to hold calibration.

I really wanted to make use of all the memory but that isn't possible and it does seem to run better.

with win7 you need to download the mobo drivers before you do the install then install them.  normally you can use the cd that came with your mobo but upgrade the drivers as soon as you can.  if you have installed newer bios on your mobo then sometimes you need the upgraded drivers as the older ones wont work.

in other words always have the mobo drivers in hand before you do a win7 install/reinstall.

Yep, what he said.

Going 32-bit is not even an option for windows nowadays. You're limiting your hardware big time doing that.

Didn't know you could do that. May have to give that a try.The computer will read the drivers from the cd without windows?

You need to press F6 during the initial setup when windows asks for additional drivers. For example if you want to install the windows to a raid drive, you need to install the raid drivers first. Windows 7 will accept a cd or a dvd, for older versions you actually needed a 3,5" floppy! :D

no, install windows first then the mobo drivers.  for example on mine I will install win7 64 then immediate after i need to install the usb drivers, Ethernet drivers, and some others I cant remember, otherwise I wont be able to access the internet or even a joystick.  then once I am able to access the internet I will install firefox as I dont trust or use IE, install the security features I want then go to the manufacture's site and download the latest drivers for everything including video card and sound card.  then after that I do the windows security updates.  make sure your video card or sound card drivers dont get updated using windows update or it will mess you up.  then after a few hours of downloads and beer time, you are done :).

dont worry if you are missing drivers as you will know when you cant acess a feature like the internet lol.

Motherboard chipset drivers, such as AHCI Sata and raid controller drivers have to be installed during the setup, otherwise your computer won't boot at all using AHCI mode after the install for example.

well what I wrote above is what I did on mine and had no problems.  I cant remember exactly which drivers but as I remember I was missing some usb and ethernet drivers plus I needed to update my ahci sata and raid controller drivers.  not sure if win7 installed generic drivers first.  I never had to install any drivers in the middle of the installation.

Then your motherboard doesn't have AHCI enabled - windows will not boot in AHCI mode without the drivers.

Native AHCI support is implemented since Vista so no need for drivers unless it's and add-on card with unusual behaviour. Switching from IDE-Mode to AHCI after Win install is possible with some tricks.
So are native USB drivers, USB3 chipsets should at least work in USB2 mode but for USB3 speed they may need manufacturer drivers.

You're right about the native support. I was misinformed there. But AHCI does need to be on during the first install, enabling it afterwards in bios will result in a no boot situation. It can he enabled later by modifying the registry and then rebooting in AHCI mode.
