CAP1 gotta question for ya.
« on: December 21, 2012, 08:20:12 AM »
Hey bud i recently aquired a 429 BBF for my dad for christmas. He has no clue about the engine its a total surprise to him. Anywho since i have the motor on a stand i decided to re-ring it and put new bearings in it. Would you happen to know what the torque specs are on the main bearings and rod bearings. Ive read some conflicting specs on various forums so I figured I'd ask the pro lol. With that said I'm going to be putting this monster in his '68 stang that he's had since he was 16..... he's 50 now and always wanted a BBF for it. Im aware that you have to beef up the undercariage so you dont twist the body up like a soda can. Any leads on a kit for this? And lastly do you know where i can get some headers for it? gunna be a tight squeeze in there, someone mentioned crites restoration? Any help would be appreciated... thanks DMcBeezy

I have a 1970 429......my rod bolts are torqued to 45 ft. lbs and the main caps are 105 ft lbs. These specs come from the Ford service manual for a 1970 Thunderbird.

uptown probably has ya covered there. if you want to give me year, and what kind of car it's out of, i'll try looking it up for ya.

also, captain virgil hilts may have the specs right off the top of his head, since he has a machine shop.

I hope you understand the 429 wasnt done on the"line" at ford.

It was shopped out and the car had to be modified to fit the engine as it was IIRC 2 inches too wide to fit.  The motor mounts have to be relocated and the front  shock towers need some surgery. You will need a toploader as a auto wont fit either,oh and forget A/C!

But,if the right parts are used on the 429 and it can breath,it'll be a scary ride indeed! One of those tape 10bucks to the dash and dare someone to grab it! :devil

Look forward to seeing pix of the project!

Ok cap gotta ask another question if ya dont mind.... After doing some research on the engine via casting #'s ive come up with some not so desirable heads on it. (D3VE-A2A) Apparently the achilles heal on this motor is the restricted heads, especially the exhaust runners. My question is , is there anything that can be done to these heads i.e. port and polish or would it be better to just find another set of D0VE-C heads. I know John Kaase makes some sweet P-51 heads for it, which if it were my engine I'd invest in getting but getting my dad to spend money is as hard as getting midway not to fly a spit lol And lastly as far as intakes go it has the D0VE-9425-B now but was considering either going with the Weiand Stealth or the Edelbrock Victor, any thoughts there? Thanks for the help. It was amazing to see my dad completely speechless on christmas and even shed a tear. This car is his baby and he's had it 35+yrs. Hasnt been on the road since '94 so im glad to see he's interested in getting her up and going  :salute

I don't want to discourage you but I want you to know you'll need some deep pockets and some imagination to get that engine in there more than likely. First off was a BB in the stang to begin with? If not you'll have to beef up the suspension totally and find a 9" rearend. Some parts you'll have to make yourself, such as the exhaust and possibly the motor mounts. You'll find out soon enough that there's only an inch clearance between the heads and shock towers. The steering linkage will take some clever thinking to get around too. If I were you, I'd leave the 429 striped down for now as you'll need to take it out half a dozen times until you get everything to fit right. You'll have your work cut out for you for sure.

The easy answer would be to find a 68 to 71 Mustang that had a 429 in it to begin with and grab the parts out of it. But they're getting damned hard to find these days. The first mistake a lot of guys make in projects like this is they spend tons of cash building a motor just to find out the car isn't ready to accept it yet. A lot had to be done to the suspension and body first or you're in for a whole lot of time consuming, expensive headaches.
You're going to feel a good welder, plasma cutter or torch........anyway these are just some of the problems I ran into with my Fairlane. Looking back, I wouldn't do it again. I should have just found a 390 and went from there.
But I like I said before, I'm not wanting to discourage you. Just letting ya know what your in for.

As far as beefing up the suspension i think we can handle that. My best friend is constantly building custom frames for airbagged vehicles from the ground up. He has all the nice fancy plasmas and welders. Couple of cases of Nasty Light (Natural Light) i know he will be down to help lol

You might consider a mockup motor, they dont cost a whole lot and make fitting the engine a whole lot easier!

i've not very much experience on the big blocks......but stuffing that thing in a 68 mustang is possible.....but it will be VERY hard to do it right, and safely.
