My thought - the distance from the headrest (or back of the seat) to the paneling is different. Check out these profile shots.

Cockpit closeups work better. British cockpits tended to be cramped and the gunsight was almost in the pilots face. American cockpits were a bit more spacious.

Typhoon Cockpit with the pilot crammed in.

Hurri cockpit with the pilot crammed in.

More spacious P40 cockpit with a mount to bring the gunsight back to the pilot.

Famous Lady ferry pilot not crammed into the cockpit of a P40.

This kind of says it all for Lavochkin cockpits and the short movement we have in the game. Anyone see the rear view mirror......

It appears the default view is currently set at X height above seat and X distance back from the gun sight.  I'm not seeing an issue other than the differences in plane cockpits.  Me thinks there may be differences based on which version of AH a specific plane was released in, but otherwise it is a pick your poison situation.

I think HTC should have a "default pilot view" option which would NOT be looking through the gun sight.  Instead it would be as a pilot would normally see out of the cockpit.  The view would be centered within the cockpit at X height and over the exact same spot in the seat.  I'm 73in tall, and my eyes are approximately 28in above the seat as I sit back in my desk chair.  Since the average pilot in WWII was at least 4-6 inches shorter than I, if HTC would put the "pilot default view" at 24inches above the seat directly above where the seat and backrest meet up, that would be great.  Obviously, HTC could take it a step further and lower and raise it based on typical ethnicity traits.  Meaning shorter for Japanese and Italian, taller for American and German (?), average for Soviet, British, Aussie, French, etc.

There is nothing wrong with the view the planes have now, ultimately.  I'd like to be able to hit the key that would allow me to fly the plane in "typical pilot mode", and "combat mode".  No pilot flew hours and hours in WWII canting his body forward, to the right, etc, instead they only did that when they knew that had a gun solution on the target.

One could simply become damn good at cam to the point where you know where your opponent is going to be and point your guns in that area and presto! No need for crazy look over the nose views. Btw, have you tried rolling caldera? Helps sometimes when you can't look over the nose and at times can help offensively. :salute
