Just a quick question.....server 2008 normally you would have to use Microsoft office and outlook express...my question...is there any other mail client that would work instead of Outlook?

Windows server 2008 is server OS. It has not much to do with email bar the SMTP service and that you can install mail server on it. If you mean MS Exchange, then yes, as long as POP3/IMAP are enabled you can use any POP3/IMAP compatible email client.
Although, the reason why many run Exchange is for its calendaring and group collaboration functionality, especially in combo with Lync and other UC products. You lose most of that functionality with clients other than Outlook.

Mozilla email clients + Lightning plugin have limited support for Exchange calendar.

So if I was to go with a web based client, I'm picking I would need to ensure that it stripped the mail from the hosting client before the server?...Currently it collects the mail every 15mins...the email client (domain hosting site) is then stripped of the contents...Or can I configure the web based mail client to retrieve the mail from the server?
hmmmm I also have to keep in mind I have two alias emails which need to actually go to others on the server ... admin@ and info@

Cheers for your help guys...... I'm just being a tight donkey really.....no other reason than that not to use office hahaha  but if something works to a good degree I may just do it..... I'll give it a go

Web mail clients are IMAP, and , usually, won't delete mail from the server, so Exchange would still retrieve it. In general, you should decide which server (Local Exchange or your hosting email service) are you going to use for client retrieval and stick with it.

If you liked Outlook Express but don't like Outlook the Office monster (see, I don't seem to like it!), the Live Mail of the Essentials pack could do the trick. By default it will save a copy of POP mails on the server until deleted from the Trash Can.

If that was what you were asking, I seem to have difficulties understanding English today.
