New Lanc skin
« on: February 27, 2013, 07:10:29 AM »
Does anyone have a skin or picture of P Popsie flown by Air Marshal Sir Harold Brownlow Morgan "Micky" Martin, KCB, DSO & Bar, DFC & Two Bars, AFC after he joined 617 sqd?

With the new Lancaster I would love to see this skin.

I know this plane was modified to drop the bouncing bomb, but after that mission it was converted back to standard specs. It took part in many mission from High/low level bombing runs to being used to Dive-bomb mark with marker flares for the rest of the squad until the Mossies took over that roll.

I hope to see the few skins were currently have for the Lancaster re-done.  They would look even nicer on an updated model.   :)

Did the RAF ever use a non-black for the underside of the Lanc???  I've looked briefly and all I could find pictures of were that of the night time black underside, at least British RAF versions.

There is not much variation in the Lancaster paint scheme. Apart from tail marking and nose art
there was vary little difference.
When the new version comes out I will redo 'The Grog's The shot' and do Picadilly Princess.

Good to hear!  I use the 9 Sqd RAF skin mostly.   :aok

Some of the 617 Squadron Lancs used to drop the Grand Slam bombs had a different scheme from usual. On these the brown and green was extended down the sides of the fuselage and the bottom of the aircraft was grey rather than black. Also the squadron codes were repeated on the horizontal tail. However the Grand Slam Lanc was rather different in shape to the standard version we have. There were no upper and front turrets and no bomb bay doors, just fairings on the front and rear bulkheads of the bomb bay. So I'm not sure whether a Grand Slam Lanc scheme would be permitted by HTC, I'll have to check with Pyro. There are photos at the IWM site here and here.

I expect I will do a few Lancs skins when time permits. The first is a request from Lyric1, LM 130 code JO-N from the RAAF's 463 squadron. This has a large devil as noseart with the title "Nick the Nazi Neutralizer".

Yeah Lancs never had a lot of wildly different skins . But some of the famous ones should get a slot even if they are simply code changes on the side.

As to the later Grand Slam 617 skin, I hope they can be added.

Pyro's given me the OK to do a 617 Squadron Grand Slam Lancaster skin, although we both consider it a bit marginal in terms of being an acceptable substitution. I'll make it the next Lanc I skin after "Nick".

Doesn't really belong. It would be like skinning a Reno racer scheme on our P-51... Sure a version of that plane flew and looked like that, but not the one we have. IMO just skinning it because you can isn't the best solution.

For what it's worth, I'm against the specialty grand-slam schemes on our lanc. Lancs just didn't have much variation. It's a fact. We have to work within that limited selection of paint schemes.

Well your analogy is way over the top but I agree a G-S Lanc is borderline WRT acceptability. I'll drop it if the consensus of this forum is that I should, so does anyone else have an opinion on this?

I would prioritize other skins before doing this one.  Current lanc only has 3 skins (including default), so I would say that 2 other, certainly valid skins, be added before this one.  Then, if by that point you still are willing to skin it and it's still considered acceptable, skin it. :)

Wow I find it hard to believe it has been almost 38 days since our last path. We should have release another 38 versions by now  :bhead

I agree that it is borderline, but it isn't like it will be a fire engine red Lancaster so I don't think it would look glaringly out of place like a Reno racer would.
