Computer don't work.
« on: March 17, 2013, 07:50:24 AM »
When I plug it in the fan goes like heck but the PC won't turn on. The fan won't stop unless I unplug it. I thought might be the power supply unit so I swapped it out but it didn't do any good. PC is only 2 months old.

The "fan going like heck" indicates your computer gets power but can't go any further. Most common culprits are a faulty Ram stick or videocard.

As Torquila said, reseat the Ram. Also, try with only one Ram stick at a time. If that doesn't help, try with another video card if you have one, even a built-in one on the motherboard will do. If you don't have one, try without the vidcard. You can try booting also without Ram. You are likely to hear beeps, indicating the motherboard is able to recognize a missing vidcard or missing Ram.

press and hold the power button in for 5 seconds. Some of the newer motherboards use that to"finish" a shut down. Once it finishes the shut down they can reboot..... if there are no other problems.

Actually that method has been valid for a couple of decades. Win95 was the last OS I can remember to say: "You can now safely turn off computer". It's a better way to force a power-off than pulling the plug, because it tells the hard drive to stop spinning and park the arm.

Anyway, it's sound advice in case of a stuck hibernation mode. Good point, Fugi.  :salute

Reset the CMOS, try booting again. Most common reason for 'stuck' computers.

I re-seated the ram. Holding down the on button for a few seconds does turn off the cpu fan, but the computer still will not start, the cpu fan just starts again. I couldn't find the little doodad to reset the cmos so I just took the battery out and put it back. So far nothing has worked, I'm just gonna have to take it in tomorrow. This is a stock gateway pc that I bought new two months ago. It's clean as a whistle inside and I haven't installed any internal hardware.

That's what warranty is for. Hopefully you don't have anything irreplaceable on the hard disk, because they might at least do a factory reset after refurbishing.

When my PSU was failing it gave symptoms like that. Computer would hang on 2-3 attempts, then boot normally. After replacing the PSU it was rock solid again.

If you have a video card with a fan, make sure that fan is starting.
I had a GeForce 8200 in my old Dell 8400 and had the same problem.
When I tried to boot up the main fan would spool up like a Me-262 until I thought the blades would fly off. And yes, unplugging it was the only way to shut it down.
I open the case and push started the video card fan and ran for another two months like that. LOL
I’m one of those people that let their PCs run 24-7.

First thing I did was swap out the psu.

As Bizman said if you have warranty left on your computer, return all parts to stock condition and have it fixed. Do not even mention you opened the chassis to avoid voiding your warranty.

Its a bite late for the warranty (unless you still have the old psu), what brand is it?

If you don't mind going further, reseat cpu. Make sure the lever is in the proper locked down position.
