this would have gotten more attention in the hardware section but, here goes...for $1000 you can put together a decent system.
unless your kid is going to be majoring in math, engineering or one of the hard sciences...an i5 will do what's needed with fast core speeds for less money, that you will be able to put into a better video card or bigger monitor.
