If it is what I think you are seeing (not sure without pics), it is likely a halo caused by ice crystals imbedded in high light cirrus clouds.
We see that quite a bit in winter up here and occasionally in summer as well. We call it a sundog and in winter it generally means it's going to get colder.

Yep, seems like that is what it was.. Was seen all over, lasted about 4hrs..
I got some great early pics, while the effect was very intense.. No clouds had risen yet..
As time went on, the high clouds started to show, which kinda diluted the effect..
I'll have to sign up at a pic hosting site so I can put some pics up..
