For the car people
« on: May 13, 2014, 10:45:49 AM »
Had a friend attending an SCCA Staring Line Class/Event so I tagged along for some pictures. I'd never tried that kind of photography so it was a learning experience.  :)

We've got several thousand pics to sort through and upload but we're making decent progress. Next time around hopefully I'll be a little better at that kind of photography. Eitherway, everyone involved had a hell of a day.  :D

Auto X is definitely a tricky subject as it is difficult to get a great "WOW" image of a car going around a cone. Good panning on the Grand Sport. What are you shooting with? This pics look a tad under exposed to me but it may just be my laptop screen.

Yea I don't quite know the angles/locations to get amazing pictures yet (still fairly new to photography), but there's always next time.  :)
Shooting with a Canon T3i and "Canon EF-S55-250mm" lens, just the basics for now. The sky was really overcast half the day so I did end up under-exposing a lot of the non-panning ones. Panning had plenty of light, just a lot weren't in focus as I had never done that before!  :lol

Few more (friend's Impreza);

The best autox photos I've seen are taken from just inside or just outside the turn, and are sharp enough to show detail of the tire deformation and inside tires lifting a bit (or completely off the ground).  A bonus is if you can see debris lifted from the track by the tires, making the picture seem more dynamic.  Capturing the driver looking cool and not looking straight ahead is kind of neat too.

Also, in the first picture posted the concrete chunks behind the car (black fiesta with red stripe?) are completely distracting.  A decent background helps a lot.  If the background isn't cool, then depth of field needs to be reduced to blur it out.

Also, lots of people don't want their license plates showing so come up with some way to blur them out without just putting an ugly gray rectangle over the plate.

But that's just my opinion...  In these pictures I'm not looking cool or anything, but you can see the body roll and track debris so its obvious the car is racing.
