nvida gpu
« on: April 19, 2015, 04:59:43 PM »
I logged on today for the first time since last monday and was treated to these ridiculously small dots on my map, they look like pin points!
I also was treated to icons going grey in my gunsight. I had a really low FR in a large furball, so low in fact that I got the message "disabling advanced graphics settings." and the game froze. I had to ctrl alt del. that situation and shut it down with task manager.  Normally I never see anything below 30fps even in the largest of fights. Nvida geforce experience just updated my graphics drivers and I thought that might be the problem but no dice. I rolled back the driver to the previous version and that didn't solve anything. I tried a system restore twice and both times it said that something went wrong and it couldn't identify the problem.  :bhead Anyone have any idea what is going on here? Last time I had this problem it was just a resolution size issue. I'm seriously stumped.

recently had the same issue with my gtx 750. always had 59 to 60 fps . had the driver update and same thing as you described but it did not switch graphics in game. i did so manually and still had issues . im stumped as well.
1st check to see if any other programs are running,  2nd using task manager end processes that are not needed to play, look for high cpu usage processes. 3rd stop all antivirus software . this is what i have done with some success.

The strange thing I don't see anything running that shouldn't, or isn't, normally there. Including my anti virus. I've been playing for a while now and it hasn't crashed or gotten real laggy like it was, I just keep having those really small radar targets.  :bhead Goona play for a few hours tonight and see what happens.

Update: about 45 minutes in I got the message "Out of video memory, consider reducing ground detail range, etc..." The game crashed about 5 minutes later. "aceshigh.exe has stopped working." Another thing I've noticed is that my temperature reading for my gpu is now flashing back and forth between 108degrees and 0degrees. I havent touched the thing since last monday, aside for jumping on world of tanks for about an hour yesterday, and it was working fine. Now I'm starting to get worried.

your gpu is overheating.  clean it first also clean your case.  if possible also leave the side panel open.  gpu's are meant to shut down at 100c I believe to avoid damage to the card.

I think a system restore is also a bad idea, kind of like a last resort thing.  dont remember the exact details but people who know more than I do always recommended against it.

I should have put 108degrees Fahrenheit. My bad  :salute It's also a laptop, I leave the fans running anytime i play a game and Ive never seen it over 140 degrees Fahrenheit. I tried a system restore twice with two different dates and it shut down in the middle of it so they didn't complete. I'm not sure if that factors in here or not.

108 f=42c in a gpu is almost like freezing water.  heck my gpu in a tower runs at 36c just looking at the bb.  not sure what to tell you here.  I think the issue is your gpu is overheating, what is causing it, not sure.  not familiar with laptops.

Low gpu temp would on the other hand indicate that the GPU is not utilized fully. Either driver hasn't activated acceleration at all or there is some other major bottleneck.

fbEagle, after reading the first two lines I was going to ask if it's a laptop, which you then kindly informed it to be.

My suspect is, that you're having a dual video system in your laptop. A simple Intel chip for desktop operations and an nVidia chip or card for more demanding tasks. Every now and then it may happen that the computer somehow loses the instructions about when to switch to the more powerful chip. That has been known to happen at an update. Check your video settings in Windows to set AH to use the nVidia card.

Grey icons are typical for an Intel video chip.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Good call. If the laptop uses an Nvidia chip there's a setting in the Nvidia control panel: Always use discrete GPU. IIRC you can set it as global default or you can create a game specific profile like in the attached image:

I should have explained those temps are not during gaming. I usually see anywhere from 130 - 140 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the game.

I went into the nvida settings and selected the nvida card as default for aces high, it was previously set to auto. I only had time for a short test as i have a full day of classes ahead of me but my icons are back to regular size and I was running 60 fps in the tower!  :x   I'll give it a run for its money tonight and see if anything goes wrong but it's looking good so far! Thanks for all your help gents, seriously,  :salute   You probably saved me a decent chunk of money!
