Just stay off of the dpreview forums.  If all the idiots there spend as much time actually doing photography as they did arguing about whose gear is .004% better, and pixel peeping at images blown up to 500% just to find fault with everything...  well then they'd all be the next Ansel Adams or Art Wolfe.

Personally, for techy specs and reviews I prefer dxomark.com, as it's all very, very technical with no bias, and for general handling/use/real world reviews I like Luminous Landscape which also has lots of good non-techy articles on becoming a better photographer.  Also if you're into wildlife photography like me, then check out Moose Peterson's website and BT Journal publications.  BT stands for Biology and Technology, as he covers both the animal biology aspect that's important to finding and getting close enough to photograph wildlife, as well as the Technology like sensors, lenses etc...

I agree.  I just use dpreview for equipment specs in dummy terms.  I still consider myself a beginner and have downloaded several of the "cheat sheets" from the Digital Camera World website.

But the website you posted about wildlife looks interesting.  Now if I can only get the damn chipmunk to stand still for 2 seconds!
I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.

Damn chipmunks don't listen to nobody!
Flight Leader: "Bogeys at 2 o'clock!"
Wingman: "Roger, It's 1:30 now, what do I do 'til then?"

When it comes to lenses I've always felt that there's no point in buying Nikon or indeed Canon and then buying third party lenses. Sure they might be more expensive but there's a reason for that.

I always had Nikon SLRs but never digital. My last camera is a film camera. I may be be able to get a digital Nikon this year.  The problem I have is that my Nikkor lenses are older and are not fully compatible with the less expensive Nikon bodies.  So I either get rid of the lenses or buy a more expensive Nikon!

On the other hand it's all a bit academic I can't afford to buy one at the moment.  :cry

When it comes to lenses I've always felt that there's no point in buying Nikon or indeed Canon and then buying third party lenses. Sure they might be more expensive but there's a reason for that.

Third party lenses have their place.  For people who cannot afford Nikkor, or Canon EL, or Minolta G, or Sony/Zeiss glass. The likes of Sigma, Tamron and Tokina make some very good lenses for a fraction of the cost, sure they've also made some lemons, but a little internet research goes a long way to avoiding them.

The average Joe looking at 4x6 snapshots of their family vacation would be hard pressed to tell you if  whether they were taken with a $400 lens, or a $3,000 lens.

Personally I've got probably ~ $8-9K, invested in lenses right now.  Most are high end Minolta G and Sony/Carl Zeiss glass, but I've got some cheaper stuff too, and right now I'm seriously considering picking up the new Tamron 150-600mm..  Why?  Because it's $1k, vs $3k for the closest thing that Sony/Zeiss make, and it's a step up from the Sigma 400mm 5.6 prime I'm using now.  Is the Sony better then the Tamron?  Yup, by maybe 5%.  But to the average viewer in 90% of the prints I'll do, they'll never notice that little difference.

The thing about optics is you pay a premium to get that last little bit.  It's basically a exponential curve with X axis being quality and Y being price.  Like I said the premium lens might be 5-10% better optically, but it's gonna cost 300% more.

The other thing that's driving up the cost of premium lenses in the digital age is sensor advancements.  Used to be 5-10 years ago that a perfect lens wasn't that critical, because even a mid-range lens could out resolve the sensor.  But now if you wanna squeeze every last bit of resolution out of the latest 24, and 36, and now even 50 megapixel sensors, you some super duper premium optics to resolve that fine.

I'd hold on to those old Nikkors.  Is the lack of an AF motor the only compatibility issue?  Even on a body without an AF motor you can still use them in manual focus, can't you?  Or pick up a used Nikon FF body from a few years ago, like a D700.  One advantage (for buyers) of the rapidly changing digital market is the drop in resale value of a model, as soon as it's replacement comes out.

What he said. I have dozens of non-AF lenses from Minolta that I use on my Sony DSLR. And for the better cameras you might also investigate the digital camera backs that are available. After what it cost me to modify a Leaf and a Yashica I hesitate to mention it, but there could easily be more affordable options.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

Hey Copper, I don't know where you are located but I just found a 70-300mm non VR Nikon lens for $70 on my local craigslist. If you are in Florida it might be worth picking up. http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/pho/5066097537.html

 For what it's worth..
Been very happy with a Sony Nex 7, started w/nex 5 but needed viewfinder and aux viewfinder was close to price of the 7. Then was looking at the Ziess lenses, than the price..yeoww. Got sony lens for 'everyday'..old adage 'stop it down' works well stopped down.
I still have my stable of Nikon lenses from film days..$35 adapter..now I'm happy. No AF, anti-shake...ya-ya...bought some second hand, like 55/3.5 macro, sharp as ever I remember,$35 with patience....500mm nikkor mirror, lens clean case battered $70...plus the nikkors I already had...
 Just sayin...when I get a D3000 I'll go Nikon for lenses.
