Hat View Tip
« on: November 20, 2015, 11:41:42 PM »
In order to get the most out of your hat views you need to add an "up" modifier. This is usually a key or button that you can hold while manipulating the view hat. By itself you get the straight up view and combined with the side and rear views you get up/side and up/rear views. For the following tip you need an up modifier.

Now with the view hat pushed up you already get the front/up view so you don't need to add "up" to it. However, since you have an alternate front view available in AH, you can set that second front view to "over the nose" and map it to the hat up view. This gives you a useful view for shooting while turning. When you combine hat up with "up" you still get the front/up view. When you just use the hat up view you see the second front view, set to over the nose or whatever you prefer. This let's you add a useful view without needing an extra button while keeping all your current views.

The Thrustmaster has a rocker bar on the throttle.  This is exactly what I use the rocker bar for.

My set up (HS=hat switch, RB=rocker bar):

HSn (n=neutral) = straight ahead over the nose
HSn+RBL= left lean over the nose
HSn+RBR= right lean over the nose
HSup = look straight up
HSup+RBL = looks 10 o'clock high
HSup+RBR = looks 2 o'clock high
HSdown = looks back over top of head rest
HSdown+RBL = looks 7 o'clock high
HSdown+RBR = looks 5 o'clock high

(I may edit this. Can't remember how I get to look 9 o'clock high and 3 o'clock high.)

Looks like you don't have a forward/up view either.

Jinx, do you have a T-flight Hotas? If so, have you noticed that the rocker bar doesn't center accurately? Or is it just a flaw in my throttle? Anyway, I've had that "look up" button configured to my throttle for ages to be used with my left index finger. Couldn't live without it! Then again, I most often don't live long in any fight, no matter how I configure my buttons. But at least I usually know where the killer came from!

My forward/up view is the third button down on the thumb side of the throttle assembly.  If I hold that down, and engage the hat switch, I get a bunch of "forward/up" versions of the hat switch views.

Yes it's a T-flight Hotas.  And the rocker on mine does not re-center.  I have to flick the hat switch forward with my right thumb to recenter.

Here's the rest of my buttons:
Throttle side:
Left thumb top=flaps retract
Left thumb 2nd=flaps deploy
Left thumb 3rd=look forward up
Left thumb bottom=zoom toggle
Left index top=range voice transmit
Left index lower=channel voice transmit (squad channel)
Rocker bar=lean left and right
Base unit left=toggle icons
Base unit right=tail hook
Hat switch is self explanatory
Middle thumb button=weapons select
Right thumb button=WEP
Trigger=all guns
Right index=secondary (which works out to either bomb/rocket/drop tank release, or cannon-only)

Ooh, the T-Flight has more buttons than my TopGun Afterburner! But apparently the rocker switch is of same poor quality...

Note:  If I wasn't clear, everything following "Base unit right=tail hook" is on the joystick side.

Hope I'm doing this right but when I first came into AH, I was shown to set all views for left, right, up,Etc. Then go to another or second hat switch and start all over with right up, left up, forward up, etc. again.  (Keeps both hands busy) By luck I had already discovered if I have one button set for look up,( which is easy to get to with one finger.)  You can look at all your regular views left, front, right, etc. and just pull the up button at the same time and get up-right, up-left,up-front, etc. That way I can see all my views or all my views in the up position combined.
Is this what your saying? I hope.

Kimosabe, this is exactly what we're saying. Add one single button for looking up and voilą, you've got both horizontal and upward views to all directions. You may have noticed that the up-views don't have to be in the same angles as the horizontal ones. That way your horizontal "look front" can be peeking from either side for better taxiing while "look front up" gives you a nice look at the red guy trying to make a loop in front of you.

That was the introduction.   :D  The actual tip was that you can add the second forward view, set to look over the nose, to the view hat without losing the forward/up view, as long as you have an up modifier.   :aok

If you had a 2 stage trigger you could check 6 every time you look up.  :D
