Guys I kept at it and made it to the frame.  Thanks for the thoughts!  I was going to stand in a tower if I had to, rather than just give up.  I have a work-around where I pull the plug on the JS and jam it back in again to get it going. 
It's rubbish but that's where it's at.  I even imported a new stick to make sure it was the game and not the hardware.  No diff.

I reinstalled completely.  No diff.
What can you do?  I mean really?

Then there were the lock-ups every time somebody shot at a bomber nearby.  Sheesh. Different story though.  Onwards!

Did anyone experience vox problems? Were it not for ventrillo, I couldn't have communicated with anyone. My AH squad channel and range wouldn't work. I checked everything I could think of many times, but no luck.
