I've been flying with the Rift for two weeks. I'm having a hard time playing Aces High WITHOUT it - so now 100% of my flying time is with the rift.

No drawbacks as far as I can see - except that I find dogfighting in it a breeze compared to the ole "find them with your hat views" or even track-ir (I have an older track-ir 3)

Some of the views are still a bit wonky (field howitzer) but the rest are good. And there's an issue with sound settings not being saved in VR mode (being fixed shortly).

There's also a community mod and some nVidia settings you can setup to help improve video quality. They actually work quite well!

Then again, I'm biased as I love the feeling of flying... for me Rift flying way more enjoyable and easier to take-off and land - but that's just me. I've been flying and simming for over 33 years.

About the only complaint I see from new users centers around the resolution of the screens, aside from the audio bug we have in the game.  We are still tweaking the interfaces in the game for VR.  It is mostly in good shape right now.

For me, it took the game to a whole new level of immersion and made target tracking simple.  It really feels like you are in the cockpit.

There's no way I'd fly now without it.

Without it I just can't really make out what's going on well enough to fight so it's seriously a game changer for me.

You do not need the controllers for AH.

Gone from the game. Please see Spikes or Nefarious for any Ahevents.net admin needs.

I bought 1 monday.

came home today, turned on pc, the headset would not connect.

3d experience is great.

CLARITY is a big negative. Take a regular piece of window screen and place it in front of monitor, now jiggle minutely back and forth.

You are so close to the display that you see the dead grid around the pixels. Everything is fuzzy, as distance happens its worse. It hurts cuz your eyes want to focus on something but can't. Its pixelated like an early kindle, but because of the constant refresh rate it jiggles.

Demo a RIFT, then demo a VIVE. I did not demo the RIFT, I demo'ed a VIVE today. I'm upset with myself now for not researching more thoroughly. I had high hopes, been waiting for this. The actual display technology is not gonna cut it, it hurts.

ASROCK X99 Taichi, INTEL i7 6850@4.5GHz, GIGABYTE GTX 1070G1, Kingston HyperX 3000MHz DDR4, OCZ 256GB RD400, Seasonic 750W PSU, SONY BRAVIA 48W600B, Windows 10 Pro /64

I have a Rift.  My experience so far:

On the positive side, it is really quite immersive and a lot of fun to fly.  I 'feel' the plane a bit better and the overall experience of flying is much better than I thought it would be.  Another positive is that because of that better feel for the plane landing rounds on an enemy appears to be easier, perhaps because you are in a more intuitive, more 'natural' environment with VR.

On the negative side, there is the issue with graphic quality.  I do not suffer from the well documented 'screen door' issue but the graphics are a long way behind what you get on a normal monitor or TV.  Having said that, I do not find that a show stopper at all and it is very easy to get over that and immerse yourself into the environment.  Where the poor graphics do cause an issue for me is in things like not being able to see hit sprites.  I prefer not to use tracers and hit sprites are an important indicator for me so a lack of that feedback affects my game experience.  That said, I have not applied any 3rd party fixes or tweaked my vid settings as yet.

A drawback to the immersive nature of the Rift VR is that your eyes are encased in the headset and that leads to a reduced ability to interact with your controls, from the keyboard and mouse to HOTAS to additional button boxes etc.  Even just having a drink while you fly or looking round at something your wife wants to you give an opinion on is impacted by wearing the headset.  A rather obvious thing but one worth mentioning.  I find it very hard to interact with the community on the text channels while using VR.  There are controls in place to aid this however, they are not as easy as just hitting / and then typing.

For me the biggest negative, coming from using a Trackir for the past 10+ years, is the difficulty in keeping track of an enemy plane using head movement ONLY.  If you are used to using hat switches to look around then VR is going to give increased options for tracking however if you are trying to track just using your head movement you are going to need to be very supple.

In closing, if you have the money to drop on the VR and not be too worried about if it works well in AH or not, my advice is to go for it.  It works very very well in driving games and for me it was worth it for that alone.  If you are hoping to take AH to the next level with it, I think you may be disappointed.  That IMO is not a fault of AH, just the fact that at present VR does not seem to deal with peripheral vision well and so to see behind you then you need to turn almost completely around whereas in real life you can achieve a 180 view even with your hear turned just 90 degrees, in fact you can see further than 180.

Early days.  Without a doubt this is the future so again, if you are in a position to spend then spend, if this has taken you 2 years to save.....nah, I would not do it.

Both have tiny little screens that you look at through magnifiers. The screens are incredibly good but they're tiny and magnified.

I have the Rift and wouldn't fly without it even though my 2k monitor looks better.

The physical resolution is the same.

The Rift is a better choice due to its software support.  It has better software driving it.

+1

I also have a triple monitor setup - and I might as well give the extra monitors to my sons because I'm not using the 5760x1080 resolution anymore - just pure VR for all my games. I use my Rift ALL the time flying....though as stated, typing and interacting via keyboard and controllers is a FPITA. I'm thinking about engineering some holes at the bottom of my Oculus...:)

Adjust the headset so you can look down past your nose. You need that gap for ventilation and it lets you peek at the keyboard.

Make sure that your primary screen and the oculus are on the same video card. Otherwise games won't launch. You also have to pay attention to the USB 3.0 requirements (you need 1).
