This A6M2 from the IJN carrier Ryujo was flown by PO1c Tadayoshi Koga during the June 3rd/4th attack on the Aleutian Islands, an operation that was designed as a diversion for the main IJN attack at Midway. During the battle Koga's Zero suffered a hit to an oil line that forced him to attempt a crash landing at a remote spot on Akutan Island. His aircraft landed on soft ground and flipped onto its back, killing Koga instantly. A month after the crash the aircraft was spotted by a PBY patrol aircraft and was later recovered mostly intact. Once restored to flying condition Koga's A6M2 proved invaluable to the USN and USAAF in assessing the Zero's strengths and weaknesses.
