The 332nd Flying Mongrels took off without mishap. We circled the CV twice and formed up and headed East South East. At 20k we broke through the clouds and were nearing Samar Island. Enemy cons were spotted north and we engaged several low Ki-61’s. One pilot compressed and was killed another after shooting down a Ki-61 had to rtb due to wing damage.

We continued NW and had clear skies for about 15 minutes then encountered a large enemy formation of Ki-61’s who had a slight alt advantage at 22k. A large furball went to the deck. We downed approximately  6 AC but lost all our flight when I believe another smaller flight of Ki’s joined at the end.

Mongrels lost 9 AC
Shot down approximately  6 AC
Noses in the wind since 1997

Nightmares successfully launched 15 pilots in Hellcats from our CV, circled the CV and then struck out west toward Samar Island. After breaking out of the clouds we were off the north east coast of Samar Island and to the north of the 332nd Flying Mongrels.

At their report of Ki-61s we turned south to support them and ran into a flight of Ki-61s which we engaged. Fighting became fierce and seemed like the 332nd and us got all mixed in together (although on hindsight it might have been the Assassins we linked up with and notthe 332nd).

When it was over with we had shot down multiple enemy planes but lost 5 of our 15.

We maintained our patrol screening the CVs until Midnight told us to return to the CVs and rearm with rockets for a jabo attack. On landing we had two planes suffer prop strikes .. so they landed safely but could not reup.

One plane died on relaunch but we put 7 planes into the air. We then struck west back toward Samar island's port facilities, running 6 of us at medium alt and 1 high just above the clouds.

Our high scout spotted and was engaged by a flight of Ki-61s that they followed him down to the deck. The rest of us dumped rockets and chased after them. It was a messy fight but we destroyed the whole Ki-61 flight for the lost of two pilots (our high scout and one other).

By this time we only had 20 minutes left in frame and had already lost all of our rockets. So after consulting with Midnight decided to return to base and call it a night.

Of the five survivors we landed 4 successfully but I came in a little to fast and missed with my tailhook which threw me into a cartwheel that killed me.

So over all Nightmares this is how the Nightmares VMF-101 did:

 7 KIA
 2 Crashed
 6 Landed/Survived

 9 Kills (all Ki-61s)
 8 Assists

The 412th took off with 8 F4U-1Ds from CV25 and headed west to attack P28.

We arrived at 16k and spotted 6-7 KI61s co-alt. Our assigned HRC (High Roving Cover) of Tango and BLUEmako engaged the KIs to keep them busy while the rest of the 412th attacked the port.

I took damage to my left aileron from AA, but was good enough to keep flying.

412th managed 2 ammo bunkers, 1 fuel depot and 3 or 4 AA guns on the first attack.

Blue flight lost Lucky (xaqut1) during takeoff and se (Screaming Eagle) to AA fire at the port.

Red lost Nefari to AA fire at the port also.

****

We all returned to the TGs and began landing for re-arms. All were succesful execpt for Tango, who caught a wire and spun off.

Fatz, Wail, Mako and I all headed back to P28 and finished it off, totally destroying all objects and structures except for the shore batteries for which we did not have enough ordinance. During this attack, we lost Wail to AA fire.

Once again we RTB'd for re-fuel/re-arm. Fatz, Mako and I launched again and headed for P24, which was our other Primary target.

Between the three of us, we totally destroyed the entire Port, including all guns, bunkers, barracks and VH.

Upon returning to the TG again, Mako and Fatz landed safely. I caught a wire and was flung off the side of the CV.

Fatz and Mako launched one more time in search of JU88s, but saw none. They each launched several rockets towards an enemy TG of 3x CVs, but were too far in range to score any real damage.

Fatz and Mako both landed successfully, putting their total number of traps for this frame at 4 each. WTG!!!

*********

Allied Summary
Primary Target: P24 : 100% DESTROYED
Primary Target: P28 : 100% DESTROYED

Secondary Target: P34 : Partial damage

Mutilple KI61s shot down.
JU88s were not seen by any flights.

WTG ALLIES!!!! WE KICKED ASS!!!

Damn Vulcan I've done that in the MA before...I would've been "cranky" to do it in the TOD.

6 Assassins upped from Carrier and headed west towards A8 for BARCAP.

Encountered 4 KI-61s co-alt at 15k. We tangled with them for a bit and ended up downing all four without any losses.

At this point higher KIs were spotted and a larger dogfight occured. I followed a KI into a zoom climb thinking my 6 was clear and it wasn't  :( Lost the stab and bailed. Not sure of how the rest of the squad fared as of yet.

Yeah well I remapped my bail key. I felt soooo stupid - cos I've listened to people on Ch#1 talk about it so much saying to always remap your bail key. First time I spose.

The only thing that lets me off the hook is the amount of Mag-33 guys the scewed the pooch on the CV  :D I mean... GUYS... "Marine" means you should be able to recover with your eyes closed and one hand tied behind your back  :)

MAG-33 launched and hit targets assigned at the port.  we lost quite a few after successful traps on the CV, not sure if it was due to the wind direction or what..personally I had only 85 knots going with wep on when I hit the end of the deck, so I suspect maybe the wind direction/cv direction was not suited for relaunch.  I believe only 2 survived.  Anyway, target was hit, while the other half of our escort tangled with Ki61's along with the AK's.
