Fw 190F-8 of I/Sg 5 in July 1944. At this time, the Soviets had begun their summer offensive into Finland and Germany deployed I/Sg 5(as part of Detachment Kuhlmey) to the Finnish airfield at Immola in support. From there, the detachment participated in the battle of Tali-Ihantala (June 20th - July 9th) and in other air action over the southern Karelian Isthmus after the Finnish victory in the Tali-Ihantala battle. Most of Detachment Kuhlmey was moved back to German held territory on July 23, but I/Sg 5 remained in Finland until August 13 as the Soviet offensive ground to a halt.
The 70 or so planes of Detachment Kuhlmey undertook 2,700 sorties from June 17 through August 13. In that time, the detachment dropped 770 tons of bombs, shot down over 150 Soviet planes, destroyed about 200 Soviet tanks and other GV's; losing only 41 planes, 23 pilots and crew killed and another 24 wounded.
In 1994, the Finns erected a memorial for I/Sg 5 at Immola.
Black 10 features a large portion of the rear fuselage over painted with RLM 70 black-green, probably covering previous tactical markings and tail band. The yellow wing tips and top of the vertical stabilizer/rudder are also unusual for north Russia/southern Finland operation. Also of note are the areas of repair covered in a rusty red primer.
