Same here, been out of the hobby for about 30 years. I come back and its all changed..... for the better I think

I used a base of flat black acrylic, and coat of future, then added "Alclad" Aluminum Lacquer, a coat of future, then the nose color, the tail color, and the invasion strips, another coat of future, then the oil wash, a coat of future and then the decals, smoke effects, stains a coat of future then a coat of the clear to finish it off.

So most of my stuff is acrylic. Easy to work with, easy to clean up, easy to shoot in the airbrush. Like I said Im working on a FW190 right now, got a Panther and a Sherman in the wings as well as a Bill Elliot "Coors" nascar race car. Keeps me out of trouble and its one of the few hobbies I like that my wife doesnt mind

Thats a trick Im working on is getting those decals to lay down nice like that. Looks good!

Geez, finally..

That raised rivet detail is the old school mold, we all know Ponys
are smooth as a baby's butt.. Recessed panel lines are the new way..
I'm just building this old kit, for personal nostalgia reasons..

Sure adds a ton of detail to the wing surface tho..
I love that microsol stuff, softens the decals.. First time use!

The old 1971 kit was in good shape, but the decals were wasted..
These are aftermarket, very nice..

I've been out of actually building kits for a while. But I keep up with it via YouTube and the hyperscale forums. As to the raised rivets the way around that is a lot of extra work but there's a tool for that! Gotta sand the raised ones smooth and then trace along the path your want rivets to be with the tool. Looks like a pounce wheel. They come on different sizes for different scales and different patterns. But afterwards you have recessed rivets instead.

I miss building models. Getting back to them is getting closer. Kids are out of the house now. Need to reclaim one of MY rooms!

Not worth the trouble to sand all that detail away.. I'll just roll oldschool with it..
I'm not complaining, just noting the difference between the old kits, and the new..
The weathering will be key.. Makes a great model, or ruins it..

After the decals are done, and lacquer sealed, I'm planning on a watercolor pinwash
for the control surfaces.. And I may go with pastel powder to fade the paint.. A sludge
wash will leave too much color around all those rivets, making it look too dirty..

I don't think fighter planes, get as grungy as tanks, but up in that thin air, the OD paint
got pretty bleached by the sun.. Never done the pastels before, should be interesting..

Ebay.. Not like you can find Brick and Mortar stores
that cater to plastic kit builders any more..

For me, it all comes from Ebay
