new monitor
« on: February 10, 2020, 08:51:15 PM »
Wondering which monitor to get, I have a i5-3570 @ 3.4 ghz 8 gb ram and a gtx 670 vid card

What is best monitor this rig will get playable framerates on, a 1080 with 60fps  or a 1440 with 144 refresh rate

im guessing a 4k monitor is out of the question

With the GTX 670 all of those will be underpowered. A 720p @60 Hz might give you a solid 60 fps.

If your goal is to barely keep above 30 fps which has been said to be the minimum for "playable", then a 1080p @60 Hz would give you a crisper image. Getting a 144 Hz monitor for showing a slide show, well, you know the answer.

Your best choice would be to get a newer, faster video card and think about the monitor after that. For 1440p @60 Hz a GTX 970, 1060, 1660, 2060 are plenty good for AH. For higher speeds 980, 1070, 2070 or higher are able to unleash the power of 144 Hz.

If you're on a tight budget, a used 970/1060 will give you a solid performance on 1080 or even 1440 @60 Hz.

Thanks for the input, I think this monitor may be on its way out as it goes dark for 2 or 3 seconds every so often.

My goal is a new puter  from digital storm, (hopefully not to long) it has a 2070super vid card, at that point maybe a 4k monitor ?

Maybe I should try and hang on with the intermittent blackouts.

There's old monitors everywhere. Should you live closer you could get one from me. Ask your local b2b dealers, you might get one for a couple of tenners.

For your new puter you should do some thinking about your needs and wishes. Start with the games or rather game types you're going to play in the next five years or so. What are the key elements?
  • For fast pace games like shooters, driving or air combat you'd like a fast monitor - 144 Hz or so - in order to make your move just on time
  • For a game where you're sitting somewhere looking out you might like a large monitor. 40" is not too big for a cockpit!
  • For games where you're looking for tiny objects in dirty corners you'd need a high resolution for more details. For driving and flying not so much.
Even with a 2070 super you may not be able to get all of them. Physical size is the easiest as size doesn't matter if the resolution and speed remain the same. When you're going past 1080p things are starting to multiply - 4k is exactly as demanding as 4 1080p monitors at the same speed. If you're going for higher speed the same applies. For both 4k and 144 Hz you'd need the best card on the market and you may still struggle depending on the game.

For a 2070 I might consider something like a curved 3440x1440 34-35" @ 100-144 Hz to combine all worlds. Such can be found for reasonable prices, around 500 and up.

Once again  thanks for the help,  for the past few years (since AW) the only game I play is AH so that's what my monitor requirements would be for.

for aces high especially the 2070 is an about perfect choice.

it wont quite push 4k at 144hz with all graphics maxed out, but should maintain 100+ easily.

and 4k 144hz monitors are pretty rare and expensive.

so in reality, assuming maxed graphics,
it will drive any of the 1080p displays at 144hz no problem.
you could hook up 4 (or more) 1080p displays to the single card and run them as one giant display also.
it will also drive a single 4k monitor at 100+ fps which is great but most 4k monitors top out at 60hz anyway. this isnt an issue it just means your always getting a nice smooth 60fps.
it also will drive an oculus rift or other vr headset if you wanted.

i have a 1080p 144hz screen, a 4k 60hz screen, and a rift.

this part may be a bit subjective,
but i much prefer the colors and brightness of the 4k to the few extra fps from the 1080p monitor for aces high.

and i really like the immersiveness and sense of depth the rift gives so i use that 99% of the time, reverting to the 4k when i remove it.

Since graphics cards normally are usuable for a number of years I suggest you go as high as you budget can get you, but leave the very most top-end cards out there.
You must ask yourself what I'm going to play in 3-4 years from now, maybe VR ?

Link below may give you a hint how cards compare :

Dell's 27" 1440P Gsync monitor is on sale right now, not a bad option for $300 for that system 428 Cobra Jet.  It's on for half price.  It's a TN panel, not an IPS, but I had a similar Asus ROG Swift 27" Gsync 1440p that was TN/VA, and it was excellent, when I upgraded to the IPS version of the same monitor (165hz 27", but otherwise the same ROG Swift pretty much I found), there wasn't a huge difference overall.  Anyhow, for three hundred bucks, this will work fine for your system, plus you can always turn the res down to 1080P if you need to (yes I know it isn't Native Res, but for AH3 I've done this before messing around with my older 27" as above, and it worked fine).  You can always grow into this monitor too if/when you upgrade your system.  Not 4k, but 1440p is a nice jump from 1080p, even for just watching Netflix/Youtube vids etc.

I have that monitor that Gman mentioned and its the cats meow...however I just lost my old backup monitor...it completely died on me so I am looking to replace the Dell with a large 40" + curved screen so I can use it for work and gaming. I do love the Dell 27" S2716DG G-Sync monitor though and it can push 144Hz like a champ. At that price its a steal since that monitor still retails most places for around $499 -$599 most of the time.
