Lt. William Fowkes
Mindoro, Philippines 1944
This is the P-38L-1-LO flown by Lt. William Fowkes (37 Missions) out of Mindoro, Philippines, from January to August 1945. When asked the history of the maiden on the nose of his fighter his high-school sweetheart, Helen, whom he married a lifetime ago, contended,"It isn't me. I was never a brunette in my life."
"Actually, the nose art was the creation of the artist who drew the girl," Fowkes said. "He painted what was in his mind, and I thanked him for it."
When the war ended Fowkes left the service and attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania until recalled by the Air Force after just two years out of uniform. He spent more than 25 years in the military and retired as a Colonel in 1971.
