Walter Nowotny's Bf 109F-4
« on: November 09, 2021, 10:34:08 PM »
This is an adoption of Larry/Truekill's original skin with a name change to account for a correction in squadron designation.

Bf 109F-4 flown by Walter Nowotny of 3./Jg 54 in the Leningrad sector during the summer of 1942. This aircraft is often incorrectly sited as "White 8 of 1./Jg 54." In reality, Nowotny was a member of 3./Jg 54 at this time and thus the number would be yellow. This misconception is due to overexposed black and white reference photos that have the yellow elements in a very bright shade, nearly pure white, and the fact that Nowotny later transferred to 1./Jg 54 - but they were entirely in 109G-2's by that point.

Yellow 8 was photographed on or shortly after July 11, 1943. Nowotny achieved his 30th victory on this day and the rudder has 30 kill marks painted on both sides. The aircraft is finished in a field or depot applied camouflage scheme of RLM 70 and 71 greens over the standard day fighter grays. Yellow theater markings are found on the lower cowl and wingtips as well as between the fuselage crosses under the fuselage. The Jg 54 green heart and 1st Gruppe insignia are painted on both sides of the fuselage. Nowotny added a "lucky 13" in yellow inside the green heart. It would serve him well.

July '42 would prove to be his most successful month yet and his best flying the Bf 109, with 17 confirmed victories. It would only be in the following year, after his unit converted to the Fw 190 that Nowotny would achieve legendary status; passing 100 victories in June and becoming the first pilot to down 250 planes in November 1943.

Just short of a full year later, Major Walter Nowotny would be killed when his Me 262 was downed by an American P-51D on Nov 8, 1944. He was only 23 years old.

Beautiful.   Really a good-looking scheme on the 109, too.

Not the usual 109.   Nicely done.

Looking good! <S>
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
